We’re returning to Hollow Earth in 2024 to see what happened after the epic battle between Kong and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Will this be a team-up? Or will the two monsters again be at odds after their brief truce in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong? Today Legendary Pictures released the teaser trailer for the next installment of the MontserVerse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and revealed the film’s theatrical release date of March 15, 2024.  

Ready for the numbers? Godzilla x Kong will be the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise, the 13th film in the King Kong franchise, and the fifth entry in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. The MonsterVerse kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla, starring my favorite married couple-turned-siblings Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, in the leads, followed by the new Kong: Skull Island in 2017. In 2019, introducing Godzilla’s most recognized foes, like Mothra, King Ghidora, and Rodan, Legendary released Godzilla: King of Monsters before the 2021 release of Godzilla vs. Kong. 

The new teaser trailer features what appears to be Kong (could it be Kongzilla?) sitting on top of his throne at the center of Hollow Earth, making it clear that the upcoming film is a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, which ended with Kong returing to Hollow Earth and letting ‘Zilla swim back into the ocean after the battle with Mechagodzilla. Story aside, let’s be real, even we monster fans mostly watch these movies because of the awesome fight scenes. Who doesn’t remember the first fight between Kong and Godzilla on the Naval destroyers in the ocean? Ok, if you don’t remember the fight on the destroyers, then the MonsterVerse put the whole sequence online for fans to enjoy.

As a Godzilla fan, I had hoped to be writing the Queen of Monsters returns today, but she’s nowhere to be found in the teaser trailer. And yes, Godzilla is a she. I will die on that hill. She had a baby.

As I write this article out loud (because I can’t contain my excitment whenever any new Godzilla news happens), my wife and Features Editor Avery Kaplan is telling me in the background that Legendary Pictures is probably saving the ringer reveal for the next trailer, but I NEED more She-Monster in my life NOW, or her trans child, and I want to see her latest power update (and since she grows a little bit in each film, how much bigger is she going to be in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire?).
