In Guerilla Green by Cookie Kalkair and Ophélie Damblé with letters by Jim Campbell, Ophélie is a 30-year-old city resident who has become a part of the the guerilla gardening movement. The graphic novel, which is being published by BOOM! Studios, will be available at your local comic shop on April 7th, 2021, and your local bookstore on April 13th, 2021, but you can get your first look at the upcoming comic right here!

The story centers on Ophélie’s involvement in the guerilla gardening movement, an ongoing project that, for decades, has sought to re-introduce some biological botany to the lifeless concrete jungle. In addition to affording readers a look at Ophélie’s personal story, the comic also includes practical, nonfiction information about making city environments more hospitable for plants.

The creative team has plenty of experience to seed the project. Damblé is responsible for the “Ta Mére Nature” (“Yo Mama Nature”) YouTube channel, and in 2017, she left a job at a desk to become a city farmer. Kalkair is a graphic novelist whose recent work includes The Last 9 Months, a chronicle that follows dads during pregnancy.

Damblé and Kalkair spent over a year working on Guerilla Green, and Kalkair says that by the end of the project, Kalkair had convinced him that anyone could become involved in the guerilla gardening movement.

You can get a look at several pages of Guerilla Green below, and if you scroll down further, you can read the press release from BOOM! Studios in its entirety if you scroll down past that – then scroll down even further and let The Beat know if you’ll be hitting up the comic shop for Guerilla Green in the comment section.
