AI is everywhere, and supporters want to keep pushing the boundaries of the technology, whether or not it’s a good idea. But what happens when AI becomes indistinguishable from an actual person? Scary, right?

In Fantagraphics’ upcoming graphic novel Identical, created by Leah Hayes, twin girls are born in the not-so-distant future that now has fertility treatments using AI. The twins’ mother, desperate for a child, uses the technology, but after they’re born, she begins to think one twin is human and the other is not.

Narrated by one of the twins, Identical “takes the reader down an uncanny odyssey of self-discovery… one where you are never sure which ‘self’ you really are.” Hayes drew from her own experience as an identical twin for the sci-fi tale.
