The story begins on the day of an annual festival for the village. After an attack from the Cailleach destroys the village and kills Saoirse’s father, she and Brahm, her younger brother, are left to fend for themselves (along with the assistance of the mysterious Nan). However, Saoirse soon learns that the birthmark on her shoulder, which has always been a source of shame, is actually a witchmark, giving her the ability to resist – and even absorb – dark magick.

Can the mysterious Nan teach Saoirse all she needs to know in order to control her powers and combat the growing threat of the Eater of Worlds?
