Today, the Comics Beat is proud to share an exclusive announcement and cover reveal of THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL, an upcoming art book filled with “scandalous tales, family gossip, illegally obtained medical records, behind-the-scenes character designs and illustrations” from acclaimed cartoonist Eric Powell. THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint. It will be available in local comic shops on October 23, 2019 and at book stores and digitally on October 29, 2019.
Eric Powell is perhaps best known for his critically acclaimed series THE GOON. The premise of this art book is quite hilarious and has a definite tongue in cheek vibe. This is what Powell said about his new art book: “Ten years ago I thought to myself, ‘I’m a multiple award-winning artist who has been at this for a while. It’s probably time to put out an art book.’ And since then many notable jag-offs have had art books published. Including Justin Bieber’s The Art of the Bieb: A Retrospective of Paintings I Made With My Butt. Unfortunately I did not get an art book. What I got is what I always get… THE SHAFT! But then my friend and editor Sierra Hahn said, ‘BOOM! will do it.’ And here we are. On the verge of the publication of a biography about a backwoods idiot who taught himself how to draw pictures for money.”
This is quite a funny way to introduce your new book. Here’s how BOOM! Studios describe the THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL:

THE ART (AND MANY OTHER MISTAKES) OF ERIC POWELL sheds light on the deliberate and painstaking process of becoming a world renowned comic book creator as recalled by the artist and a few of his delinquent friends. This extensive art book spotlights never-before-seen childhood drawings, early superhero test pages, film poster art, and the establishment of Powell’s homegrown publishing house Albatross (Exploding) Funnybooks.

Eric Powell is an interesting creator in that, in addition to his critically acclaimed series The Goon, he also quickly launched a publishing house for hi other titles, but also to publish other creator-owned titles that became cult-classics in their own rights.  Albatross Exploding Funnybooks published Rebecca Sugar’s Pug Davis, Fabian Rangel Jr. and Logan Faerber’s weird war tale ’Namwolf, and Brendon Small’s Galaktikon. Using an art book as a way to make a retrospective of his own career, what was a success and what wasn’t, is an interesting to distinguish his art book from a more conventional one. It’s also another good get from BOOM! Studios, who’s been firmly establishing themselves as a pioneer in comics publishing for the last few years.
