Red Sonja fans can now add the warrior to their statue collection. Dynamite has launched their first major preorder campaign on Indiegogo, featuring a 1/6 scale high-resin statue of the She Devil with a Sword. Based on Frank Thorne’s cover for Marvel Feature #4, the piece sculpted by Steve Kiwus stands at 12.5 inches tall and displays the heroine in a fearsome pose with her deadly weaponry ready to attack.
Thorne is known as the character’s first truly definitive artist. His clean lines, fluid action, and slight hint at eroticism catapulted Red Sonja from supporting footnote in Hyrkanian lore to worldwide phenomenon. The artist and his fans also contributed to the rise of cosplay through his lookalike contests.
“The Vampirella Statue by Jose Gonzalez celebrating her 50th anniversary was such a success that we knew fans deserved a classic Red Sonja statue to match! But to have a great piece capturing the essence of Frank’s artwork, we needed a sculptor who would create the most compelling statue, and that is Steve Kiwus. I’m proud to be working with someone as talented as Steve to bring Frank Thorne’s great 2D cover into a great 3D statue!” said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. “No artist defined our fiery-haired heroine more than Frank Thorne and fans will love this piece!”
Besides the main piece, backers can choose from an array of other goodies such as graphic novels that reprint or represent the Thorne era like Adventures and Further Adventures of Red Sonja collections. There is also a three volume Red Sonja by Frank Thorne Artist Edition, which reproduces his peerless original art at original size as well as deluxe hardcover art books. Fans can also take home a Frank Thorne Red Sonja enamel pin.
The Red Sonja statue can be preordered in black and white and “berserker” editions, or backers can upgrade to a limited edition marked and numbered proof edition.
To pledge, head to the campaign and get your order in by the end of June.
