In possibly one of the biggest announcements surrounding NYCC ’13, Dark Horse and Dynamite have announced that Grendel and The Shadow will cross over for a three-issue miniseries in 2014. Matt Wagner, Grendel’s creator, will be both writing and drawing the story.

This will make only the second Grendel has crossed over into other properties, with the character previously meeting Batman. Each issue of this miniseries will be 48 pages long – essentially making this the length of a six-issue storyline, but just broken into three. Each issue will be published in Prestige format.

As well as being the man who created Grendel, Wagner also has a history with The Shadow, having written The Shadow: Year One for Dynamite. For this story, Grendel will be the one travelling over to The Shadow’s territory, transported to the noir New York via (of course) a mystical artefact.

Wagner is quoted in the press release:

Ever since the smash success of my two previous crossover events (with Batman), I’ve had many offers over the years to see Grendel cross blades with a varied host of other characters. But none of those opportunities ever excited me as much as this possibility.  I’ve been a huge fan of The Shadow for many, many years and my love of the character finally saw fruition when I got the chance to literally re-define his origins by writing  The Shadow: Year One for Dynamite.  To have the chance to both write and draw The Shadow facing my own creation is something of a dream come true!

It’s been a while since we saw two companies allow their properties to cross over like this, making The Shadow Vs Grendel a pretty notable launch for both publishers. The crossover is currently scheduled for 2014, with no set date as of yet.

  1. “Wagner also has a history with The Shadow, having written The Shadow: Year One for Dynamite a few years back.”

    Oops. Correction time.
The Shadow Year One by Matt Wagner is still ongoing.
He wrote Green Hornet year One a few years back.

  2. The only downside of a new major Matt Wagner project is that Mage 3 gets pushed further and further back. It was my understanding he was even about to start it when he got offered the Tower Chronicles!
