New York Comic Con is only a month away, and we’ve got our first big panel that’ll surely be stirring up quite a bit of buzz on the docket as DC is bringing President of DC Entertainment and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns to the show to give a rundown on what’s coming in the first issue of the much talked about Doomsday Clock, bringing Superman face-to-face with Watchmen‘s Doctor Manhattan.

We’ve only gotten some scant details so far on the actual plot of the book, we know it takes place one year ahead of the rest of the DCU, and that according to Johns’ panel at SDCC, the smartest men of two worlds will meet (Ozymandias and…Luthor? Batman?). And while we knew Superman was the key protagonist of the series, given all the promo material we’ve seen so far (his logo as part of the Doomsday Clock, one of the covers for the first issue), now we get our first hint as to what Batman’s role in this might just be…getting his hands on a very important piece of writing.

Yep! That’s Rorschach’s journal, the integral document that details his observations and worldview during the course of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark work. One of my favorite observations about those 12-issues came from a read of Grant Morrison’s Supergods, where he pointed out the circular nature of Watchmen based around the reading of said journal. Just as you come to the end, the beginning starts all over again, nothing ever really ends. And on that score, could we have been reading Watchmen from Batman’s perspective all along? Or might we now? Should I stop while I’m ahead?

Doomsday Clock by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank and Brad Anderson will be on November 22nd, and here’s the full press on Johns’ upcoming appearance at NYCC:

Mark your calendars for the DOOMSDAY CLOCK panel on the New York Comic Con main stage Friday, October 6, at 6:00 pm ET.

During the panel, Johns will reveal the first pages of issue #1 and lead an in-depth discussion on how it all began, starting with his acclaimed DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH one-shot and leading to DOOMSDAY CLOCK this November. 1. I like how DC is the “good company” out of the Big 2 and gets a pass on this utter scab garbage that nobody will care about after it is over.

  2. I no more want to see Batman reading Rorschach’s journal than I want to see Columbo investigating Twilight Sparkle’s diary, or Sherlock Holmes holding Punisher’s war journal.
