Rebirth 1Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

As the New 52 era ends, the Rebirth era begins.

While the Rebirth relaunches don’t hit until June, the end of May sees the publication of the DC Universe Rebirth kick-off one-shot. It moves an impressive reported 235,791 copies, and there’s a second print on the way, so DC is likely pretty happy with that. And early reports are that the June launches are selling pretty well too. But more on that next month when we actually see the numbers.

May also sees the final issues of many DCU titles, including several New 52 launch titles that made it all the way to issue #52: Batman, Superman, Action Comics, Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Catwoman, Batgirl, and Aquaman. (Justice League also makes it to #52, but not until June; because lateness.) Which if you’re a glass-half-empty type means that forty of the fifty-two New 52 launch titles did not make it to the finish line.

All eleven of the #52 issues in May had freely-orderable variants (f.o.v.s), the theme being re-drawings of their issue #1 covers. The only other f.o.v.s this month were Justice League #50’s Batman v. Superman cover and the load of variants for the two Hanna-Barbera relaunch books. Most (though not all ) of the #52s saw a small bump over their issue #51s.

And yet, even with DC Universe Rebirth one-shot and some final-issue boosts, overall the DCU books saw a slight decline in the average sales for the line, which I attribute to the many other titles that did not have f.o.v.s this month.

Also deceptive is the average sales for Vertigo this month. If you look down near the end of this column you’ll see that there’s actually a slight rise, but don’t you believe that. Seven of the twelve Vertigo titles released in May did not make the Top 300, and when I’m estimating those sales for purposes of the charts I err on the side of more sales, which is quite likely making the estimates higher than they actually are.

On the positive side, the first two of DC’s Hanna-Barbera relaunch titles, Scooby Apocalypse and Future Quest, came it at levels unseen for licensed cartoon books in quite some time. And yes, those numbers were boosted by many variant covers (as well as perhaps some curiosity), but given the inevitable drop-offs and settling in they should provide for a sustainable level of sales for a bit. (As long as they can keep to a schedule…)

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

1 - DC UNIVERSE REBIRTH ($2.99)
05/2016: DC Universe Rebirth #1 -- 235,791

May’s top seller is DC Universe Rebirth, the extra-sized one-shot setting up their Rebirth “not a relaunch” that now in full swing. This got second printing, and there are reports of high sales and sell-outs so far for the June Rebirth books, so it looks like Rebirth may be just the shot in the arm that the DCU needs.

4 - BATMAN ($3.99)
05/2006: Batman #652 -- 77,257 [78,435]
05/2011: Batman #710 -- 55,086
05/2012: Batman #9 -- 134,605
05/2013: Batman #20 -- 129,039
05/2014: Batman #31 -- 107,499 [109,343]
---------------------------------
05/2015: --
06/2015: Batman #41 -- 142,155 (- 6.1%) [145,305]
07/2015: Batman #42 -- 117,441 (- 18.3%) [118,702]

04/2016: Batman #51 -- 101,922 (- 40.8%)

No Snyder or Capullo for the final issue, yet it adds a couple hundred more copies over last month to rise a smidge in sales. Like all the other titles that hit issue #52 this month, there’s a New 52 f.o.v. cover.

Batman was undeniably the big success story of the New 52. All 58 issues (that includes the #0 issue, the Future’s End one-shot, and the Forever Evil 23.* issues) sold over 100K. I can’t think of any comic in the modern Diamond era that has sustained sales that high for that long.

7 - JUSTICE LEAGUE ($5.99)
05/2012: Justice League #9 -- 131,332
05/2013: Justice League #20 -- 97,676
05/2014: Justice League #30 -- 77,456 [78,419]

Justice League is running behind, but that doesn’t stop retailers from ordering large on the extra-sized conclusion to the (seemingly never-ending) “Darkseid War” story. There’s a Batman v Superman (unbagged) f.o.v.

11 - SCOOBY APOCALYPSE ($3.99)
05/2016: Scooby Apocalypse #1 -- 69,520

I reckon that this is the most copies a comic starring Scooby-Doo has sold since the 1970s. There were oodles of variants; still, even if this drops to 25% of initial issue sales it will be a hit by modern Scooby-Doo comic standards.

14 - BATMAN/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ($3.99)
12/2015: Batman/TMNT #1 of 6 -- 134,526 [164,941]
01/2016: Batman/TMNT #2 of 6 -- 52,337 (- 58.8%) [67,898]
02/2016: Batman/TMNT #3 of 6 -- 64,444 (+ 2.3%) [69,444]
03/2016: Batman/TMNT #4 of 6 -- 65,132 (- 6.2%)
04/2016: Batman/TMNT #5 of 6 -- 65,616 (+ 0.7%)
05/2016: Batman/TMNT #6 of 6 -- 64,911 (- 1.1%)

This leveled out quickly, and at a sales point that likely makes all concerned very happy. DC needs more successes like this. If a sequel hasn’t been announced yet, expect one any day now.

19 - SUPERMAN ($3.99)
05/2006: Superman #652 -- 70,458
05/2011: Superman #711 -- 38,471
05/2012: Superman #9 -- 62,232

04/2015: Superman #51 -- 38,103 (- 58.3%)
05/2015: Superman #52 -- 54,317 (+ 42.6%)

2 years : + 21.3%
5 years : + 41.2%
10 years: - 22.9%

A good-sized boost for the final issue and conclusion of “The Last Days of Superman.” There was also a 2nd printing of issue #51, but we’ll have to wait for the end-of-the-year numbers to see how many copies it moved as it didn’t make the May chart.

29 - FUTURE QUEST ($3.99)
05/2016: Future Quest #1 -- 48,627

Not quite the sales level of Scooby, but still a rather good debut. There were oodles of variants here as well. So far, the Hanna-Barbera reboot is looking like it was a good idea.

33 - DETECTIVE COMICS ($3.99)
05/2006: Detective Comics #819 -- 65,800
05/2011: Detective Comics #877 -- 39,609

No f.o.v. this time out, which results in more than 10K fewer copies being sold. There was an incentive variant (1:25), though those obviously don’t have the same level of a sales effect as the f.o.v.s.

39 - ACTION COMICS ($3.99)
05/2006: Action Comics #838 -- 62,702
05/2011: Action Comics #901 -- 44,143

Originally DC was going to go straight to trade with this digital first series and bypass the physical floppies all together. But something changed their minds.

Anyway, Arrow Season 2.5 debuted at about this level (actually a bit higher), and by the end at issue #12 had fallen to half that. So probably a good thing that this is only slated for six issues. If it turns out to be a decent seller as floppies, they can always go on to make more.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold either as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month or what the sales of the previous issue of the series were—whichever is lower—for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be fewer than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the Association for Professional Basketball Research, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there is you need to contact me).

As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. Interesting is the five-years-ago figures (from just before the New 52 started) versus now. So in spite of all the “darker and edgier” New 52 revamps, “DC You,” “Convergence,” and other changes, the only characters to see a rise in sales figures since then are Batman (who’d probably sell well anyway), Superman, Batgirl, Constantine, and… Scooby-Doo? Interesting that in sales growth percentages, Scoob and the gang are one of DC’s main successes…

  2. Scooby Doo Apocalypse was a lot better than I could imagine. It inspired me to buy the other similar books. Nice surprise in fun and entertaining reading

  3. I’m really surprised by Unfollow. It’s a great book, full of mystery, intrigue, and plenty of weirdness! It’s a perfect Vertigo title! Why is no one buying this thing?

  4. Nahan: bad marketing strategies. I probably would have been interested but no interior art was visible in the Previews (I think), price of the vertigo floppy was upped 33% just before and they didn’t made any effort on the price of the first paperback as they used to.
And launching a serie demanding such a very long run of issued to be correctly mamanged (the counter can’t drop from 140 to 10 in 2 issues) at a time were any new launch making it past issue 12 is a miracle was perhaps a little too risky.

  5. Nathan: I’m buying it. And it is the perfect Vertigo title. It reminds me of Air by Wilson & Perker from a few years back, gives me that same feeling of those cool little books poking their heads out between Sandman and Preacher and Animal Man and Fables, you know? That…Vertigo feeling…mmm…

  6. “The sadness that is Vertigo” is a little unfair, considering Vertigo readers are trade/book readers. Vertigo needs a different business model when it comes to monthlies, since money’s not made off them monthly, and it’s not Vertigo’s fault, it’s DC and their publishers’ fault for not working that out.

Karen Berger understood that new books need 12-18 months to find their audience… simply because creator owned books take more time than superhero comics.

Just be glad Vertigo is still going at DC.
