Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.
Not much to write about for DC this month, as things were in a holding pattern leading up to DCU Rebirth.
Vertigo sales continue to be just awful. This month’s average (5,649) and median (4,815) sales make this the fourth straight month of worst ever Vertigo sales.
DCU average sales rise a bit to 30,003, though median sales fall to 21,974. Such a big gap between average and median sales indicates that while there are a few big sellers at the top, more titles are skewing towards the lower end, which is not where you want things to be.
Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!
Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.
(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)
3 - DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE ($5.99) 11/2015: Dark Knight III #1 of 8 -- 440,234 [449,099] 12/2015: Dark Knight III #2 of 8 -- 158,188 (- 62.5%) [168,590] 01/2016: -- 02/2016: Dark Knight III #3 of 8 -- 146,044 (- 10.6%) [150,665] 03/2016: -- 04/2016: Dark Knight III #4 of 8 -- 143,055 (- 5.1%)
DC’s top seller for April, by a fairly wide margin. It’s outsold by the first issues of Black Panther and Star Wars Poe Dameron, but that was to be expected.
Y’know, if they’d just announced this as a bi-monthly from the outset, DC could have avoided a lot of embarrassment.
An additional 5,352 copies of issue #2 show up on the chart this month at position 272; as usual they’re added into the bracketed totals.

5 - BATMAN ($3.99) 04/2006: Batman #652 -- 72,889 [82,438] 04/2011: Batman #709 -- 56,578 04/2012: Batman #8 -- 130,602 [136,218] 04/2013: Batman #19 -- 132,147 04/2014: Batman #30 -- 108,998 [111,778] ---------------------------------- 04/2015: Batman #40 -- 131,128 (+ 20.3%) [154,764] 05/2015: -- 06/2015: Batman #41 -- 142,155 (- 6.1%) [145,305] 07/2015: Batman #42 -- 117,441 (- 18.3%) [118,702] 08/2015: Batman #43 -- 124,697 (+ 7.8%) [127,996] 09/2015: Batman #44 -- 114,409 (- 9.9%) [115,351] 10/2015: Batman #45 -- 109,367 (- 4.6%) [110,031] 11/2015: Batman #46 -- 106,989 (- 2.1%) [107,758] 12/2015: Batman #47 -- 127,201 (+ 18.0%) 01/2016: Batman #48 -- 100,962 (- 20.6%) 02/2016: Batman #49 -- 102,689 (+ 1.7%) 03/2016: Batman #50 -- 163,406 (+ 67.7%) [172,256] 04/2016: Batman #51 -- 101,922 (- 40.8%) ----------------- 6 months: - 7.4% 1 year : - 34.1% 2 years : - 8.8% 5 years : + 80.1% 10 years: + 39.8%
After last month’s triple sales threat—issue #50, final issue of the “Superheavy” story, and variant cover bonanzapalooza—sales drop right back down to normal (normal in this case being just a regular ol’ f.o.v.).
The final issue (a coda, really) for Snyder & Capullo. Let us make note of the fact that, for they’re entire run on the comic (with an occasional artist friend), every issue sold over the 100K mark, something that is pretty much unheard of these days.
Also, issue #50 exhibited another 8,850 copies on the April chart at position 202 (which have been added in above).

9 - HARLEY QUINN AND THE SUICIDE SQUAD APRIL FOOL'S SPECIAL #1 ($4.99) 07/2014: Harley Quinn Comic Con #1 -- 64,978 [68,667] 12/2014: Harley Quinn Holiday Sp #1 -- 63,465 (- 7.6%) 02/2015: Harley Quinn Valentines #1 -- 68,611 (+ 19.4%) [75,747] 09/2015: Harley Quinn Road Trip #1 -- 51,135 (- 31.8%) [51,668] 04/2016: Harley & SS April Fools #1 -- 75,354 (+ 45.8)
Harley + Suicide Squad + Jim Lee = pretty good sales for a one-shot.

Running late; the f.o.v. is a Batman v Superman cover (non-pollybagged).

14 - BATMAN/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ($3.99) 12/2015: Batman/TMNT #1 of 6 -- 134,526 [164,941] 01/2016: Batman/TMNT #2 of 6 -- 52,337 (- 58.8%) [67,898] 02/2016: Batman/TMNT #3 of 6 -- 64,444 (+ 2.3%) [69,444] 03/2016: Batman/TMNT #4 of 6 -- 65,132 (- 6.2%) 04/2016: Batman/TMNT #5 of 6 -- 65,616 (+ 0.7%)
Continues to sell quite well, and stabilized rather quickly in the upper-sixties. If DC could have found several more series that acted this way sales-wise, they would need to be doing yet another (not-a-)reboot.

19 - JUSTICE LEAGUE DARKSEID WAR ($3.99) 10/2015: JLDW Batman #1 -- 37,657 11/2015: JLDW Superman #1 -- 33,584 11/2015: JLDW Flash #1 -- 34,313 11/2015: JLDW Green Lantern #1 -- 33,104 11/2015: JLDW Shazam! #1 -- 31,087 12/2015: JLDW Lex Luthor #1 -- 32,226 01/2016: -- 02/2016: -- 03/2016: -- 04/2016: JLDW Special #1 -- 60,818
See what happens when you actually solicit your one-shot tie-in with “Darkseid War” in the title?

Has both a JRJR f.o.v. variant and a 1:25 incentive variant. Plus this issue apparently features a Deadpool parody.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)
The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.
ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.
Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold either as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month or what the sales of the previous issue of the series were—whichever is lower—for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

DC should just call itself “Bloodlines Comics” to better reflect where its priorities are (spoiler: stuck in 1993).
Survivors’ Club and Last Gang in Town ended last week.
Slash & Burn, by virtue of Vertigo’s lowest-selling title for April 2016, ended that month.
Seriously — are trade sales of Doctor Fate what keeps that book going? Paul — come back to the Legion!
I’m curious why Midnighter and Martian Manhunter, both great books that are being cancelled, are being kicked to the curb while Doctor Fate, selling worse than both of those, is apparently continuing post Rebirth? Makes no sense. Maybe you’re right, Steve, and it’s trades sell well?
RE: Green Lantern: Edge of Oblivion – I am still for about the 3rd month wondering why the numbers for GL: Lost Army are not included in the past counts.
As for Bloodlines, I remain convinced that DC has to do things with titles every once in a while for some reason in the family of trademarks/copyrights. There are too many times when older names get thrown out for no reason. Like “Star-Spangled Comics featuring G.I.Zombie” – why not just “G.I.Zombie”?
FYI, OMEGA MEN was always intended to be a 12 issue series. They axed it about halfway thru due to poor sales – it being a limited series was part of the online outburst/petition that ended up changing DC’s mind and resumed the series to its natural end, which was last week I believe.
