The Beat can announce that the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has named comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger to its Board of Directors, which oversees CBLDF’s mission to protect, preserve and promote the freedom to read comics. Steinberger will serve alongside CBLDF President Christina Merkler, Vice President Chris Powell, Treasurer Ted Adams, and Secretary Dale Cendali. The fund’s at-large directors are Jeff Abraham, Jennifer L. Holm, Reginald Hudlin, Katherine Keller, Paul Levitz, and Gene Luen Yang.
“The CBLDF serves an essential function in the world of comics, manga, and graphic novels,” Steinberger said in a statement. “As a member of this community, I’m excited to take a larger role alongside the impressive group of Board Members to help promote and encourage the freedom and diversity of comics. It’s as important as ever to be vigilant.”
Since it was founded by Denis Kitchen in 1986, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has protected the First Amendment rights of those in the comics field, in addition to developing educational efforts in service of the community at large.
