In early 2018, Sony PlayStation brings back one of its pillar characters, Kratos, in a brand new series of adventures. God Of War will hit consoles early next year and naturally, the orbiting tie-in merchandise includes an introspective look at the game’s beautiful new art style. Dark Horse Comics is partnering with the studio to bring you a new art collection and a new comic book series based on the highly anticipated game. Here’s Dark Horse’s press release on the news:

Journey through the mythical Norse wilds and explore beyond as Dark Horse, Santa Monica Studio, and Sony Interactive Entertainment proudly present the essential companions to the highly-anticipated video game God of War, allowing readers to witness the creation of this incredible new journey! In 2018, they will publish The Art of God of War, a limited edition of The Art of God of War, and God of War comics.

The Art of God of War is an intimate chronicle of the years-long odyssey to bring Kratos and Atreus’ beautiful and brutal world to life. Step into Midgard and explore beyond, as Dark Horse Books and Santa Monica Studios are pleased to offer the quintessential companion to the enormously anticipated God of War. This is a tome unlike any other, including an expanse of gorgeous art and in-depth interviews that set readers on an exhaustive behind-the-scenes journey to witness the creation of an epic of tremendous scale.

The Art of God of War Limited Edition is a gorgeous artifact that appears to have come straight from Kratos and Atreus’ adventures! The beautiful tome has a realistic leather-like cover with bright silver foil and red gilded pages. Enclosed in a clamshell case with a cloth-textured lining, The Art of God of War Limited Edition also includes a cloth-covered collector’s portfolio with two gallery-quality lithographs, and will be available for purchase through the PlayStation Gear store.

The partners will also work together to publish a God of War four-issue comic series in 2018. iZombie creator Chris Roberson is signed on to pen the adventures of Kratos as he battles to control his own rage and understand his role as a father when facing dangerous threats from mythical Norse creatures. Artist Tony Parker (This Damned Band) will lend his illustrative skills to the mythical Norse adventure series.

If you’ve never heard of GOW or don’t own a PlayStation. The action game centers around a warrior named Kratos in ancient Greece. When he’s duped by the gods into killing his own family, Kratos goes on a bloodthirsty rampage across multiple games and two console generations to slay the immortal beings he holds responsible. It’s about the most violent thing you can do with a controller. Sony has been showing off a sort of relaunch for the franchise on PlayStation 4. Shifting to a Norse setting and making Kratos a father once again, but it still looks to keep all the over-the-top violence.

The God of War game series has been around since the PlayStation 2 era and has a large dedicated fan base. Meaning Kratos and his dad bod will be a massive focal point for Sony’s 2018 portfolio. This new jump from Greek to Norse mythology opens up lots of storytelling possibilities. Chris Roberson has been working on many of Dark Horse’s Hellboy universe books, so he’s no stranger to crafting pieces of an established lore in ways that feel fresh. I expect a lot of questions about the game’s lead to be answered in the comic book.

Just an opinion, but I like the art book’s cover more than the game’s box art of Kratos and his son crossing the Delaware. You see it at the end of the Paris Games Week trailer.
