Marvel/DC cover artist Jeehyung Lee has launched the Kickstarter campaign for the final chapters of his new horror comic GUMAA – The Beginning of Her, which has garnered rave reviews from fans and industry professionals, including James Tynion IV (Something is Killing the Children, Nice House on the Lake) and Brian Pulido (Publisher of Coffin Comics, creator of Lady Death).
Born and raised in South Korea, Lee, a former art director and concept artist at Netmarble, has had an exciting career that has spanned the mediums of comic books and video games. He has designed dynamic covers for Marvel, DC, and Boom! Studios, an album cover for K-Pop artist Wanna One, character designs for the Epic League RPG Dark Throne, and has created original characters Luna Snow (my obsession) and Sharon Rogers for the hit video game Marvel Future Fight.
Also known to international fans for his dramatic and unique character portraits, Lee launched his first creator-owned title, GUMAA: The Beginning of Her, in 2022. The campaign brings his cinematic style to a full-length comic series for the first time.

GUMAA – “exorcism” in Korean – tells the story of young Khalida’s escape from drugs and prostitution and her transformation into the high priestess of a cult warring against infected humans called “Maagi.” It explores “how people form obsessions of all kinds,” Lee wrote on his website.
The campaign describes the overall story as follows:
An ancient war between demons and angels ended millennia ago, but powerful relics lay hidden somewhere in our world, waiting to awaken their power.
Young Khalida escapes from the Luciel drug syndicate and discovers an ancient blade in a long-abandoned temple. She uses the blade’s power to become the Goddess of the City, controlling the citizens through dark magic and fear.
Khalida’s cult of followers battle hordes of infected humans, the MAAGI, with “holy water” bullets, supervised by Manuel, the former lieutenant of Luciel who now swears allegiance to Khalida.
Lee drew inspiration from films like Constantine and The Dark Knight when creating this dark supernatural thriller. According to the creator, one of the story’s main antagonists, Manual, is based on a minor character from The Dark Knight. “He’s the one who discovers a dagger on the ground,” said Lee. “As I began developing the visual look of GUMAA, I thought a lot about Batman and The Dark Knight.”
The final issues bring the conflict to an exciting conclusion as Khalida faces off against her young nemesis, a combat-trained warrior with a hidden connection to Khalida’s past.
Read the description for the final installment:
But Manuel has a plan of his own and manipulates events from the shadows, targeting Khalida with the help of Kenji, a young policeman-turned-relic hunter and a mysterious new ally—a deadly, combat-trained warrior who has a hidden connection to Khalida’s past.
Their final action-packed confrontation will reawaken the ancient war and change the balance of power between Heaven and Hell… forever.
