Back in May, DC Comics announced a new Absolute Edition of the seminal Crisis on Infinite Earths event is set to be released in May of 2026. The iconic 12-issue series from the legendary team of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez is being completely remastered and recolored for the new release, but the updates don’t stop at the book’s interior. Original series inker Jerry Ordway has re-inked Pérez’s pencils for the massive cover of the series’ first collected edition, which was originally painted over by Alex Ross for that release of the book. Now Ordway’s completed cover, with colors by Jose Villarrubia, has been revealed in all its glory.

For comparison, here’s the version of the Crisis on Infinite Earths: Absolute Edition cover by Pérez and Ross that has been the cover to Crisis‘s collections since the first one was released in 1998:

In a social media post this morning, Villarrubia revealed the new version of the cover by Pérez, Ordway, and himself:

“I just had the great pleasure of finishing the most complex piece I have ever colored,” Villarubia wrote on Bluesky.

The cover as penciled by Pérez famously features every character who appeared throughout the 12-issue run of Crisis, some 562 characters. The new version that will adorn the updated Crisis on Infinite Earths: Absolute Edition much more closely matches the artwork found inside than the Ross-painted version.

A previous Absolute Edition of Crisis on Infinite Earths was released back in 2005. The new version, per the solicit from May, includes not just Crisis #1-12, but also the two-issue History of the DC Universe follow-up, plus “numerous brand-new essays from creators of the time, and more surprise wonders.”

Since we’re talking about nice Crisis art, in case you haven’t seen it, here’s Pérez’s dustjacket cover art from the 2005 Absolute release. Whether it will remain the cover on the new release is unknown, but it’s still a really great piece:

The all-new Crisis on Infinite Earths: Absolute Edition is due out in stores on May 26th, 2026.

EDIT: An earlier version of this post listed the originally-announced release date of February 3rd. The post has been updated to reflect the current release date for the book in May 2026.
