Born in 1914 in Cleveland, OH, Jerome Siegel was, as a teenager, a fan of the emerging literary genre that came to be known as science fiction. Together with schoolmate Joe Shuster, Siegel published several science fiction fan magazines, and in 1933 they came up with their own science fiction hero—Superman. Siegel scripted and Shuster drew several weeks’ worth of newspaper strips featuring their new creation, but garnered no interest from publishers or newspaper syndicates. It wasn’t until the two established themselves as reliable adventure-strip creators at DC Comics that the editors at DC offered to take a chance on the Superman material—provided it was re-pasted into comic book format for DC’s new magazine, Action Comics.
Siegel wrote the Adventures of Superman (as well as other DC heroes, most notably the Spectre, his co-creation with Bernard Baily) through 1948 and then again from 1959-1966, in the interim scripting several newspaper strips including Funnyman and Ken Winston. Jerry Siegel died in January, 1996.

Jack “King” Kirby’s comics career began in 1937 and continued for nearly six decades. After his fruitful collaboration with Joe Simon ended in the late 1950s, Kirby joined Marvel Comics, where the first issue of Fantastic Four cemented his reputation as comics’ preeminent creator. Edmond Hamilton came to comics from science fiction pulp magazines, for which he was the creator of grand space operas such as “The Star Kings” and classic short stories like the intense, introspective “What’s It Like Out There?” He created Captain Future for pulp editor Mort Weisinger in 1939 and, upon moving to DC Comics in 1941, Weisinger offered Hamilton work on comics scripts. Hamilton quickly became a major Superman writer. In addition, he wrote Tommy Tomorrow features for ACTION COMICS and classic stories for DC editor Julius Schwartz’s science fiction comics.
In 1952, Hamilton teamed Superman and Batman in “The Mightiest Team in the World” (SUPERMAN #76), a story he conceived as a minor one-shot adventure. Editor Jack Schiff soon made the Superman-Batman team a regular feature in WORLD’S FINEST, where Hamilton wrote the majority of stories until 1966. In other Batman, Superman, and Legion of Super-Heroes stories, Hamilton introduced such memorable characters as Batwoman, the Composite Superman, Element Lad, Dream Girl, Timber Wolf, and Brainiac 5.
Hamilton retired from comics in 1966 and lived with his wife, Leigh Brackett (a science-fiction novelist and screenwriter whose credits include The Big Sleep and The Empire Strikes Back), until his death in 1977.

I think it’s pretty interesting that DC opted to restart the Superman volume numbering for the Yang/Romita run, but didn’t restart the numbering on the actual title (they did the same for the new Batgirl team). I wonder what the rationale is behind the decision to do one but not the other.
Two questions:
– Where’s the “8-page sneak peek chapter” in most of these books? Only Cyborg vol. 1 has it listed in its contents.
– Why is the Batman by Neal Adams Omnibus missing The Brave and the Bold #102? This story was missing from the 3-volume set and the DC Universe by Neal Adams collection, too.
“See why Lee is considered the greatest artist of his generation.” By whom? Who else is in that “generation”? This is a pretty outrageous claim to make.
So Wonder Woman: Earth One won’t be for sale in the U.K.? Why?
It’s hard to imagine sales for Vertigo series getting much better now that they’ve pushed the price of single issues up to $4. Who wouldn’t just wait for the trade of the first six issues of something like Art Ops when it’s priced at $15–and easy to order online at one third to one half off? That works out to about the retail price of two single issues. Sorry, comics shops!
Out of curiosity, do all of DC’s hardcovers, including the so-called deluxe editions, still have those cheaply glued, far too tight spines that make any full-bleed art, not to mention double-page spreads, a complete pain to read? That alone would put me off buying anything.
Mike: Brave and the Bold #102 is missing probably because Adams only illustrated the final seven pages of the story (finishing it up for regular artist Jim Aparo.)
The Hellblazer writeup is wrong- those issues were written by Warren Ellis, not Paul Jenkins. Paul’s run had just ended before it.
You’re right, Charlie (though it was actually 8 pages) – but considering how ridiculously complete the DC Adams collections have otherwise been, it seems an odd thing to leave out.
(Then again, the recent Deadman softcovers omitted the ’80s reprint covers and some text from the hardcover, and the early GL/GA collections overlooked Adams’ final Green Lantern short story from Flash #226. DC has a long history of overlooking noteworthy material in its collections of classic material.)

No mention of Action Comics and Superman/WonderWoman. :( – though looking at the entry for Superman, methinks 41-46 on both counts is a safe bet. Thanx for the info on Batgirl and Catwoman, #46/#47 will be my last issues with them.
