Welcome to this week’s installment of The Beat’s Comics Crowdfunding Round-Up! Join us for a look into a story with gothic folklore and Mexican culture, an anthology on life and death, a comedian with a loud chest, and much more!

The Weakest Fish

Creators: Bryan Wizemann (Writer) and Edgar Camacho (Artist)
Goal: $1,500
End Date: December 6
Goodies: Get the digital copy for $25, the physical copy for $55, a signed copy for $75, or at higher tiers get a retailer bundle for $150.

In 1961, Tim accidentally witnesses his mother’s affair. When his family’s secrets collide, Tim flees to Mexico on foot, where he discovers a new world.

Right from the start, The Weakest Fish feels unsettling, and flipping through the preview pages only reinforces that feeling. I can’t help but be drawn to it—it looks fantastic. The story follows a thirteen-year-old boy who flees to Mexico after witnessing something he shouldn’t have, and I’m eager to learn more. At 290 pages for $55, it already feels like a great deal for such a large graphic novel. On top of that, it’s inspired by Southern Gothic folklore and Mexican culture, which makes it no surprise that the campaign is nearly funded, with backers still pouring in.

So Buttons: Life & Death

Creators: Jonathan Baylis (Creator/Author),
Goal: $3,200
End Date: December 6
Goodies: Get the digital copy for the new issue for $5, the physical copy for $10, the new issue with an origami cane for $15, or at higher tiers get the issue and original art for $60!

Fun true stories. One life interpreted by many artists. Auto-bio comix! Bonus with this one: 1 DEATH! Actually possibly more than one.

So Buttons is back on Kickstarter! Baylis returns to fund the latest issue, which, as always, is an anthology of heartwarming, true stories from multiple creators. This time, the theme centers around life and death, with Baylis reflecting on the loss of their comic dealer and their mother. This issue is a deep dive on loss and So Buttons has always delivered impactful stories through the lens of its creators. That’s what makes these stories so powerful and each release has delivered stories that have depth. It’s a fantastic addition to Kickstarter, beautiful artwork and some amazing creatives, look no further—you won’t want to miss this one.

CHEST FACE

Creators: Dean Haspiel (Creator/Artist/Writer)
Goal: $8,000
End Date: November 22
Goodies: Get the digital copy for $10, the physical copy for $15, a signed copy for $25, or at higher tiers get a signed print of chest face and an exclusive B&W print of Chest Face and Meridian Prime, and more!

A pulp noir parody about a stand-up comedian whose face is on his chest.

Haspiel has been featured before for his fantastic series, The Red Hook, so we were excited to see his return with Chest Face. As always, Haspiel’s unique ideas make for some entertaining stories. Chest Face follows a comedian with a face literally on his chest—pretty self-explanatory! However, Haspiel adds a twist with a story that tracks Chest Face as he develops his comedy special while being chased by the company that put his face on his chest in the first place. It’s a body horror satire, but at its core, it’s about the search for your first laugh and how pure that sensation is. That’s why we at The Beat are eager for more. The project is already funded, so if you join now you wont miss out! Make sure to check it out—you won’t regret it!
