A graphic novel adaptation and re-imagining of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “A Princess of Mars.”

Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars is getting a makeover. As the creators describe, the debut of John Carter is both fascinating and unfortunate. It features misogynistic characters and an imperialist narrative populated by alien races written from the pages of racist playbooks – not to mention Carter’s history as a Confederate soldier. In this iteration, all that is flipped on its head. Now, Carter is reimagined as a Black veteran of the Civil War, and the setting is made to subvert existing power dynamics. Check it out in a 104-page, full-color graphic novel.
