Momotekku

Momotekku - by Alxndra Cook from Koguchi ComicsCreators: Alxndra Cook
Goal: $2,554
End Date: October 11, 2022
Goodies: Digital, print, or both, and a retailer option

A science-fantasy comic of sisterhood, magic peach-dogs, and adventure.

From Koguchi PressMomotekku, inspired by the Japanese folk tale Momotaro (often translated as Peach Boy), will take place in a fantastical and futuristic world of gods, demons, and magic peaches. The 96-page book is a science fiction story that follows Ai after she is dragged on an adventure by a magical creature named “Dog” about finding sisterhood and learning to accept yourself. It is Cook’s debut full-length comic after creating several short-form comics, such as Wednesday’s Child and Kiyomi’s Prequel, which won 2nd Place in the Manga Jiman competition 2019.

Ploughman

Ploughman

Creators: Aaron LostyJP Jordan, and Becca Carey
Goal: $3,276
End Date: September 29, 2022
Goodies: Digital copy, including a tier with a digital bumper pack (Blaze Beyond the Pale and The Last Scarecrow), print copy, Dan Schkade bookplate, and all-star sticker pack with art by Adam Gorham, Dani, Chris Shehan, Artyom Trakhanov, and Liana Kangas

Irish Fantasy Noir Comic. Agent 5 has crash-landed and only has four days to signal his mythical home of Hy-Brasil or be trapped forever.

I just want to know more about the ‘Irish Fantasy Noir’ genre because, before I discovered the Ploughman crowdfunding campaign, I had never heard of it (although I have heard of Dublin Noir, which I assume is similar but with fewer fae). The 46-page story follows an outlander who has mysteriously crash-landed in the Irish countryside and only has four days left to signal his homeland for rescue, or he’ll be trapped in Ireland forever.

And whenever I see a pull quote from Hassan Ostmane-Elhaou on a project that I don’t know well (Hass reviewed Losty and Carey’s Blaze Beyond the Pale), I immediately know what I am about to back is a quality comic project.

THE AFTER REALM #5

THE AFTER REALM #5

Creators: Michael Avon Oeming (writer/artist), Taki Soma (colorist), and Shawn Lee (letters)
Goal: $9,000
End Date: October 2, 2022
Goodies: Digital or physical copy, digital copies of issues 1-5, Oeming signed vault, Dan Brereton variant cover, and other cover options

Inspired by Saturday morning cartoons and outlandish fantasy! This campaign completes the first arc and offers previous issues.

How can you resist Oeming’s adorable cat? In addition to being ailurophile, Oeming is an Eisner and Harvey award-winning comic book artist and writer, best known as the co-creator of Powers with Brian Michael Bendis and Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, Red Sonja, and Cave Carson with Gerard Way. His latest project is an ongoing monthly series, After Realm, inspired by his love of mythology, Saturday morning cartoons in the 80s, and Dungeons and Dragons. The cat picture alone is enough reason to back this campaign, but the delightfully fun 80s mash-up should be titillating for people who aren’t cat lovers.

Goodies: PDF or print copy, stickers, Speckles minicomics, Chompers the Beaver book, Corrupting the Youth t-shirt, button, and commission print

Cute stories, controversial messages

Leo Mancini’s Corrupting the Youth Anthology contains eleven stories for kids with unconventional messages and morals, including a talking sandwich who learns a lesson about bullying, a weird little kid who collects gum for a mysterious project, and another weird little kid who goes to war with the tooth fairy. I don’t have kids, but it sounds like a neat idea.

Der finale Band der preisgekrönten deutschen Indie-Comic-Anthologie JAZAM!

So I was born in Germany but don’t speak German (my sister, born in the US, learned the language, but not me). I could translate the campaign using software, but then I risk getting something wrong. Instead, I will just say, I think JAZAM! is worth recommending because it grabbed my attention across communication barriers. Sometimes, all you need is love, a love of anthologies and art.
