Welcome back to The Beat’s comics crowdfunding round-up! This week, we have the first Kickstarter project from the nonprofit SAY Sí, which provides free after-school art classes to students in Texas. But that’s not all, we also have some exciting creator-owned projects from more established artists, so check out this week’s noteworthy comics crowdfunding projects below!

Hockeypocalypse: Slashers

Hockeypocalypse: Slashers Comics Crowdfunding Campaign Zoop

Creators: Jeff Martin and Lukasz Kowalczuk
Goal: $1,800
End Date: July 21, 2022
Goodies: digital edition, trade paperback, signed hardcover, a set of the full series, portrait of you as a hockey mutant, and the Jeff Martin library

The Mighty Ducks meets Goosebumps, with a dash of Mad Max, in all-ages post-apocalyptic hockey horror!

I find NFL NBA NHL (or CHL) hockey boring, but damn, I do love fictional hockey. It’s the perfect sport to teach the value of hard work… and gore (hey, B-grade horror has saved my sanity more times than I can count, and besides, it has a lot to say about surviving the end of the world). As an all-ages graphic novel set in post-apocalyptic Canada, the fourth Hockeypocalypse story will teach your young-ins how to survive radioactive winters with a slapshot.

Don’t worry if you haven’t read the first three volumes, one of the Zoop campaign tiers includes all of the books.

Journey of A Troubled Mind – Graphic Novel

Journey of a Troubled Mind

Creators: Uroš Savic
Goal: $9,410
End Date: July 27, 2022
Goodies: printed or deluxe hardback, digital version, deluxe hardback that’s signed, with a hand-drawn doodle by the artist, original art

Almost a Fairy Tale by Uros Savic

A graphic novel that explores the hero’s journey through the lens of Carl Jung‘s analytical psychology sounds a-okay to me. Well, actually, it sounds better than a-okay. Using a picture book to explore Savic’s relationship with Jung’s final work Man and His Symbols is an innovative way to introduce people to Jungian aesthetics (which argues that symbolic content rises from the unconscious).

Backstory One-Shot Comic

Backstory Crowdfundr campaign

Creators: Ryan K Lindsay, Jen Vaughn, and Teo Acosta
Goal: $3,000
End Date: July 20, 2022
Goodies: physical and digital editions and a superpowered fan pack

Calling all Dancing Daddy Zemo fans! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to party like a superhero (or supervillain)? Are you looking to support a crowdfunding campaign, not on Kickstarter? Well, Haunted Vault Studios’ new one-shot Backstory is the perfect option for you: it promises a story where you can live vicariously through a group of teens who find a superhero’s ring, leading to a wickedly wild night. With a story described as “Lord of the Flies meets Glee by way of Green Lantern’s ring,” what could go wrong?

I know Vaughn’s work best from Archie Comics’ Betty & Veronica: Vixens series (which I love), so I am excited to check out some of her creator-owned work!

Anthology of comics about DIFFERENT KINDS OF COMMUNITIES made by the teens of SAY Sí’s HIVE New Media studio in 2022.

SAY Sí is a nonprofit, tuition-free, after-school art program to ignite the creative power of young people as a force of positive change. Over the course of COVID-19, the teens enrolled in the SAY Sí program discussed the meaning of community, which led to the creation of Community Bites, an anthology about the different kinds of communities that are important to the teens of SAY Sí. Backing this project supports a good cause: giving young people a chance to create and sell their art.

The Dancer – a short comic

The Dancer Comics Crowdfunding

Creators: Bianca Vuieric
Goal: $606
End Date: July 21, 2022
Goodies: digital or print graphic novel

Coming of age, mlm romance between a sophisticated ballet dancer and a jock wannabe!

I love ballet comics, and there aren’t enough of them. Needless to say, it was love at first campaign click when I stumbled upon The Dancer, a spin-off of Vuieric’s slide of life webcomic The Epic Life Adventure of Connor on WEBTOON. However, what makes this campaign one of a kind: Vuieric not only draws dancers well (trust me, it’s a rare gift), but they are also queer (with the anti-LGBTQ+ laws getting passed in the UK and US right now, it’s more important than ever to support the community).
