On Sale Today Preview: Tooth and Claw #1 by Busiek and Dewey

1
At the summer Image Expo one of the most notable announcements was Tooth and Claw by Kurt Busiek and Ben Dewey. Not only did it mark the return of Busiek with a new comic for the first time in years, but Dewey's art looked amazing. The story involves high fantasy, with animal protagonists and Game of Thrones level intrigue. The first issue is on sale today in a bargain format: just $2.99 for 40 pages of story. As you can see from the preview pagesk, this is one spectacular comic. One of the best things comics do is world-building and this looks to be a strong examples of that by Busiek and Dewey.

Image teases Luminary and The Recluse

1
Image has jumped on the teaser bandwagon with what seems to be two new series. Lumosity is about the daughter of the President of the US having superpowers (attn: Shonda Rhimes), and The Recluse seems to be a less high concept tale. Will these be coming the books announced at January's Image Expo? Or just in next weeks solicitations?

31 Days of Halloween: Madame Frankenstein

0
The Bride of Frankenstein is one of the enduring archetypes of horror. Invented by James Whale in the immortal film The Bride of Frankenstein, and played with hissing horror by Elsa Lanchester, she symbolizes the essential isolation of the Modern Prometheus—even with a mate specially created for him, the Creature receives nothing but rejection. Write Jamie Rich and artist Megan Levens have reinvented the character in Madame Frankenstein, a seven-issue series from Image Comics. Six issues are out and the 7th drops on November 5th, with the trade due in February. Interior art is by Levens and letters by Crank. The covers, seen here, are by Joëlle Jones and Nick Filardi. madame-frank-7-cover

criminal1 Back at the first Image Expo this year it was announced that Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips were going exclusive with Image for their collections, and that means porting over CRiminal from Marvel's creator owned Icon line. And this month's solicitations reveal that not only is it coming back, but there will be a new one-shot, and newly designed editions, hitting in January.

The Walking Dead graphic novels sales are up again

3
It's a rite of autumn —The Walking Dead's new season debuts on AMC, and Walking Dead graphic novels start selling like crack again. Here's the feed from the Amazon graphic novels best seller's list. Note that The Oatmeal has sold a gazillion copies, and Roz Chast is back in the top ten following her National Book Award shortlisting. Per the usual pattern, Walking Dead GN sales will slow when the 8 episode season ends, and pick right back up when it returns next year. I know Robert Kirkman has made a buttload of money from the hit TV series, but he, Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore have also made a buttload from the books alone, given the Image deal. (BTW, for long term Amazon trend analysis I refer you to Beat contributor David Carter's weekly blog on the topic, which someday I will feature here every week. Lots of other interesting things on his site, as well.) Walking_dead_compendium_1
