Here’s a curio! DC have revealed the second half of Batman & Robin’s gatefold cover, which features the first appearance of Carrie Kelley in the New 52 Universe. That’s right! The one from Dark Knight Returns. The company are teasing that she may well be the new Robin coming onto the title, to act as Batman’s partner from now on. The book does need a Robin now that the other one, ahem, got pushed out the nest.

Kelly was first introduced in The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, and her appearance here certainly is a big surprise. Writer Peter Tomasi says this isn’t going to be a one-off or dream sequence, anything like that:

In regards to how long she’ll be around, let’s just say that it’s a helluva lot longer than ‘one issue.’ I’ve got plans for Carrie that play well into the future.

The issue is out later this month. There was always going to be a new Robin, but I’m just sad to see that it won’t be Primus from Batman Odyssey.

  1. If nothing else, this will hopefully settle the question of how to spell Carrie’s last name (it’s “Kelley” in one place in DKR and “Kelly” elsewhere, and I think the bonus features on the recent DTV movies continued the schizophrenia on that).

…look, I don’t complain about the weird things you’re OCD about, do I?

  2. That means the title has to go something like 20 years into the future, when Bruce is old and grumpy right? ’cause she isn’t of Robin age until then. . .

  3. When all is said and done, not using the New 52 reboot to get rid of some of the excess Robins is going to be one of the greatest continuity mistakes DC has ever made.
