Announced over at The Bustle, Marvel is spinning off the Black Panther’s Shuri into her own series in October. Here’s the Marvel description:
“Shuri is happiest in a lab, surrounded by gadgets of her own creation. She’d rather be testing gauntlets than throwing them. But a nation without a leader is a vulnerable one — and Shuri may have to choose between Wakanda’s welfare and her own.”
It isn’t 100% clear from The Bustle if this is a limited series or an ongoing series, although I suppose that can be a fluid thing with the way Marvel likes to drop new first issues for a title. The title opens with T’Challa off in space in the main Black Panther title, so it sounds like a potentially organic setup.
Nnedi Okorafor is writing the series and Leonardo Romero in on art.
A word about Okorafor – she’s a Hugo Award winner on the rise, with HBO… I’ll just let her tell you about that…

Anyway, Okorafor has made a splash in the prose world and she’s spending an increasing amount of time in comics. She’s previous written Black Panther: Long Live the King and is currently working on Wakanda Forever at Marvel and Antar: The Black Knight over at IDW. Add Shuri to the list.
