Deadline reports that British publisher Twisted Comics have acquired the license for Black Mirror, the dark sci-fi anthology series created by satirist Charlie Brooker. The comics, based on existing storylines from the show, will debut online sometime early next year, before rolling out in print in mid-2025.
David Christopher, Director of Licensing & Merchandising for Black Mirror owners Banijay Entertainment, stated “Black Mirror needs no introduction as one of television’s uniquely engrossing brands. The show’s unpredictable and unexpected episodes will be a perfect fit for this visionary comic book series, which we’re in no doubt will appeal to a whole new dimension of fans. I’d encourage fans to get registering now to keep updated on the comic’s developments and release.”
Neil Gibson, founder and CEO of Twisted Comics, added, “It has long been a dream of mine to extend Black Mirror – one of my ‘hero brands’ – into comic book form. Now that dream is a reality, and I believe fans of the show will love what we are planning. Watch this space.”
Founded in 2012, Twisted (formerly known as TPub) is best known for Gibson (and various artists)’s own unsettling anthology series, Twisted Dark, and the tie-in comic for Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, the 2016-18 Sky TV drama created by Lee and Neil Biswas. Kenny Diack, co-owner and director of Twisted, says, “This unique partnership with Banijay Rights reflects Twisted Comics’ ambitions to be the go-to partner for creating and expanding IP, and further builds on our work to date.”
Created for Britain’s Channel 4 in 2011, Black Mirror became an even greater phenomenon after becoming a Netflix original with its third season in 2016. It has won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie three times, although the last two seasons have been criticized over a perceived decline in quality. The comics will coincide with the seventh season’s release next year, and mark the first literary tie-ins for the series, after a prose spin-off planned for 2018 was postponed indefinitely as a result of Brooker and producer Annabel Jones‘s busy schedule.
Like the upcoming season, more details on the comics will be announced closer to the time of release. In the meantime, you can sign up for updates at the official website.
