Black Hammer EncyclopediaDark Horse Comics will release a Black Hammer encyclopedia one-shot this July, the publisher has announced.
Dubbed The World of Black Hammer Encyclopedia, the book is due out July 3, to be exact. Chief Black Hammer progenitor Jeff Lemire will write the new one shot. Tate Brombal, an editor at Canada-based Bushido Red Studios, will join Lemire. A diverse lineup of top-tier talent will handle the art. This includes David Rubin (Ether), Wilfred Torres (The Quantum Age), Tyler Crook (Harrow County), and Christian Ward (Invisible Kingdom). Frequent Lemire collaborator Dave Stewart will provide colors. Multiversity broke this news earlier today.
Black Hammer, for the uninitiated, is a shared superhero universe that deals heavily in homage. It first launched back in July of 2016 with Black Hammer #1, written by Lemire and illustrated by Dean Ormston. The main narrative follows Silver Age-inspired superheros confined to a mysterious farm (sort of). The past three years have seen it spin off roughly half a dozen limited series and one-shots, drawing inspiration from comics that range from Starman to The Legion of Superheroes.
The encyclopedia will hit a week before the first issue of the upcoming Black Hammer/Justice League: Hammer of Justice crossover. It will profile the many characters that populate the growing Black Hammer world, complete with biographies and illustrations. A big takeaway here is that Black Hammer is officially a major thing, a far cry from back when it was a rough idea that Lemire had while trying to break into comics.
The cover above, also first shared by Multiversity, is the work of Andrea Sorrentino.
