DC Comics has released a preview of next week’s Batgirl #50. The final issue of the series is written by Cecil Castellucci, illustrated by Emanuela LupacchinoWade Von GrawbadgerMick GrayScott Hanna, & Jordie Bellaire, and lettered by Becca Carey, and it features the debut of a new character to the DC Universe. Ryan Wilder, the woman who will take over the mantle of Batwoman from Kate Kane on The CW’s Batwoman live-action series, will make her first comic book appearance in the pages of Batgirl #50.

Actress Javicia Leslie will play Ryan Wilder on The CW series, taking over the lead role of the series after actress Ruby Rose opted not to return for the show’s second season. Wilder will don the mantle of Batwoman following Kate Kane’s mysterious disappearance. Last month Leslie shared the first photo of herself wearing the Batwoman costume:

Ryan Wilder’s intro to the comic book DCU appears to be as an acquaintance of Barbara Gordon, though the preview doesn’t offer much of a look at her. We do learn that Wilder is an avid reader who, like the TV version of the character, lives in her van. Whether she’ll eventually take over as Batwoman in the comics – or perhaps join Kate Kane as a second Batwoman? – remains to be seen.

Check out the preview for Batgirl #50, along with covers by Joshua Middleton and Terry & Rachel Dodson, below. The double-sized final issue of the series goes on sale next Tuesday, October 27th.

Series finale! All good things must come to an end, as we wrap up this run of Batgirl with one final oversized celebratory issue! In the aftermath of “The Joker War,” Gotham is left in pieces that need to be picked up by Barbara and Alejo’s team-but is Gotham a city worth saving anymore, and how much longer does our girl have it in her to keeping fighting for it as Batgirl? Then, if Barbara is to ever give her relationship with Jason a chance, she knows she has to face him and finally make amends with the act that crippled him.
