Nexus creators Mike Baron and Steve Rude are teaming up with Dark Horse for a new collection of their creator-owned hero’s adventures—and a new tale featuring their fan-favorite creation. The publisher today announced Nexus: The Newspaper Strips, Vol. 1 – The Coming of Gourmando, which will be released both in paperback and as an oversized, Artist’s Edition hardcover. The collection will include a remastered version of Nexus: The Origin, as well as the “When She was Young” story featuring fully-painted artwork by Rude. In addition, Baron and Rude will produce a new Nexus story for inclusion in both versions of the collection, though the length and content of the story are as yet unannounced.

In Nexus: The Newspaper Strips Volume 1—The Coming of Gourmando, something long-dormant beneath the surface of Ylum comes alive, triggering a visit from the planet-devouring entity and his mysterious ally. With powers far beyond those of even Nexus himself, this unstoppable being banishes Nexus to an unknown realm—and the only way out is to face one’s worst fears!
The softcover edition of the book will be standard sized, while the Artist’s Edition will be an oversized 12″ by 18″ hardcover, presenting the art at its original size. The Artist’s Edition will also featured extra material not included in the softcover.
Created in 1981, Baron and Rude’s Nexus follows Horatio Hellpop, a resident of the future who receives the Nexus powers from an alien entity called The Merk in exchange for hunting down and killing murderers selected by The Merk. The series was originally published by Capital Comics and later First Comics before landing at Dark Horse in the early ’90s. Nexus has won multiple Eisner Awards for Baron, Rude, and letterer Todd Klein, with Nexus: The Origin winning three awards for Best Single Issue/Self-Contained Story, Best Penciller, and Best Writer/Artist Team.
