The stars of The CW’s Arrowverse series – Arrow, The Flash, SupergirlLegends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman – are set to descend on San Diego Comic-Con later this weekend, offering fans their first taste of what to expect from the forthcoming superhero series. Ahead of that, Entertainment Weekly has debuted a series of covers featuring the stars of each series, as well as new portraits of the actors in their iconic costumes.

Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen/Green Arrow), Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash), Melissa Benoist (Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers/Supergirl), Caity Lotz (Sara Lance/White Canary), and Ruby Rose (Kate Kane/Batwoman) all grace their own covers of the magazine. The covers commemorate both the Greg Berlanti-produced line of DC superhero shoes, but also EW’s switch to monthly publishing. If they were worried about only selling one magazine a month instead of four, the variant covers should help with getting people to double-dip and offset that loss.

Additionally, EW has revealed that the upcoming fifth season of Legends of Tomorrow will find Lotz’s Sara Lance having gained a superpower as the result of an illness. Giving Sara powers is certainly a change for the character, who up until this point has been known for being a skilled martial artist and a natural leader for the team. It’ll be interesting to see how Sara’s new abilities impact her relationship with the rest of the Legends, and with longtime girlfriend Ava.

There are a few things of note in these photos. For one thing, Benoist, now sporting bangs, is wearing the classic Supergirl costume that she’s been wearing since the series debuted in 2015. Earlier this week the actress shared a photo of herself wearing a modified suit, featuring long pants and a different cape connection. At the time I theorized that this is possibly a Supergirl from a different Earth; Benoist wearing the traditional suit in the EW shoot lends some credence to that theory.

Another thing to notice is the Batwoman cover, which pretty clearly recreates one of artist Michael Cho’s variant covers for the recent Rebirth series. Cho even commented on the recreation on social media:

One more thing of note, which is a little less fun: Black Lightning’s Cress Williams is absent from the shoot. Yes, Black Lightning isn’t set in the same universe as the Arrowverse, and this is an Arrowverse-specific shoot. Still, the optics of omitting the network’s only lead superhero of color are not great, to say the least. Perhaps CW and WB are saving news of Black Lightning joining the larger Arrowverse for later in the con (which seems inevitable, perhaps as a result of Crisis on Infinite Earths). Either way, it might make for some awkward conversation at the Berlantiverse company picnic.
