Dynamite Entertainment has revealed Kelly Thompson‘s relaunch of the Angel comics series will feature art by Giulia Giacomino (Lilo & Stitch), and begin in August with a crossover with the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer book. The comic, which will take place during a “pivotal point” in the Buffyverse canon, will see David Boreanaz‘s vampire detective return to Sunnydale after a new villain emerges trying to destroy the world.

The official synopsis provides a recap of Angel’s story on TV, saying, “Once the terrifying vampire known as Angelus, the man fans now know as Angel was cursed for his crimes with the return of his soul. His newfound humanity led him to the seemingly idyllic small town of Sunnydale, and a star-crossed love affair with the Slayer — Buffy Summers.
Once the tragedy had run its course, Angel set off for new adventures (and his own show) in Los Angeles as a detective specializing in supernatural cases and helping the helpless. Things don’t always go according to plan however and sometimes you do have to go home again. But what if in trying to set something right, chaos follows? This is that story.”
The book will follow directly from the first issue of Dynamite’s Buffy, with Angel offering his own perspective as narrator. Thompson says, “Starting with a big universe-defining event book opening feels risky and like a big ask of the readers, but for the idea itself to be done properly – for all the character moments and action set pieces, and emotional tumult to land, we really needed the page real estate.”
She continues, saying, “The idea demanded most of the main cast from both books to be involved, which is something that can easily tip a book over – but combining the two books for the first arc and telling one big interconnected Buffyverse story gave us the room to do the concept justice.”
Angel #1, which will also feature colors by Lee Loughridge, and lettering by Jeff Eckleberry, will be released with covers by David Nakayama, Clayton Crain, Meredith McClaren, and Meghan Hetrick, as well as an Icon variant remastering Jenny Frison‘s artwork for previous Angel runs.
You can check these out below, although Crain’s cover has been censored by Dynamite, as it contains a major reveal in the first issue of Buffy. The comic will also be sold in blind bags, each containing three exclusive covers. Thompson and Stephen Byrne‘s Buffy series will kick off in the meantime on July 22.

Are you sure the comic will pick up after the show? I see nothing in the description or the quotes that indicates that and the Buffy comic that this comic is crossing over with does not appear to take place after the final season of Angel.
You’re right, I misremembered what was said while trying to rush out the story last week. The PR for the Buffy comic actually said it will “[pick] up at a pivotal point in the character’s chronology.” If I had to guess, I confused things with the canceled revival’s pilot, and I’ll amend it now.
