In Broadside by three-time-Prism Award-winning cartoonist Noella Whitney, a woman stows away on a pirate ship… and has soon been conscripted into a life on the high seas!

Broadside

Broadside
Broadside.

Broadside follows Nora, who stows away aboard a pirate ship (and is summarily discovered). Soon, she’s brought before the Captain, who agrees to spare her life so long as she serves as a productive member of the crew.

This is the type of comic that includes a map, so if that’s something that you’re looking for in your webcomics, please take note!

Whitney began Broadside as her senior thesis for their BFA in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), which she earned in 2015. While they continued the comic afterwards, it is currently on indefinite hiatus. However, you can still enjoy many pages of comics as you catch up.

Whitney’s more recent work

While Broadside may be on indefinite hiatus, once you’ve caught up with the comic, you can check out Whiney’s more recent work, much of which is available for purchase on Gumroad.

This includes the lesbian werewolf comic TO CUT, which was recently awarded the 2021 Prism Award for Small/Midsize Press Comic. Previously, they were awarded two Prism Awards in 2018, in the Anthology category for her contribution to DATES, An Anthology of Queer Historical Fiction, Volume 2, and in the Short Form category for their comic TO MEASURE.
