After a few set photos made the rounds, many fans of The Flash television series had been wondering just who might be the mysterious black clad speedster that the showrunners indicated would be one of the new big villains of the season.
While during SDCC, it was revealed that Doctor Alchemy will be one of Barry’s more troublesome foes this Fall, there was still no indication as to who the other big bad might be.
Now, according to THR, it’s been revealed that Savitar will be the new villain with speed force powers that’s going to make life tough for Barry and friends.
Savitar was created by Mark Waid and Oscar Jimenez back in 1995, and in his comic form, certainly carries some of the aesthetic qualities of the era. In his four-color origin, he was a Cold War pilot that was struck by lightning that gives him his connection to the speed force. Eventually he becomes a bit of a messianic figure, with a cult forming around him and his abilities.
How these new enemies tie into Barry’s actions at the end of last season remain to be seen, but should make for fairly exciting viewing!
Savitar will be played by The Vampire Diaries alum Todd Lasance, and The Flash returns on Tuesday, October 4 at 8 pm on The CW.
UPDATE: Greg Berlanti took to twitter yesterday to debunk THR’s report about Savitar’s casting
For all those tweeting me or elsewhere. We have NOT cast Savitar. Those reports are incorrect. #theflash
