By Matthew Murray

The Walking Dead gets a huge boost this month as the recent storyline is a big hit. The number two issue this month is Kirby Genesis from Dynamite, though as a one dollar title its sales are somewhat inflated. Coming in at number three is the IDW launch of a Rocketeer anthology. Further down the chart we have new Star Wars comics from Dark Horse, the most recent GI Joe relaunches from IDW, a new Megaman title from Archie, and a bunch of Image comics with increased sales.

This month Dark Horse had a 4.89% dollar share and a 3.59% unit share, Image had a 4.88% dollar share and a 5.35% unit share, IDW had a 4.60% dollar share and a 4.26% unit share, Dynamite had a 2.83% dollar share and a 3.38% unit share, and Boom! had a 2.33% dollar share and a 2.00% unit share.

This month I’ve again listed every “indie” (ie. non Marvel/DC) book in the top 300.

As always thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates that reflect first month sales to retailers in North America, and can be found here.

                               3 year (+62.5%)

Massssssive increase here, and it’ll be interesting to see if the book can hold it next month. As this issue doesn’t seem to have any alternative covers or gimmicks, and the solicitation text consisted entirely of “Where do we go from here?”, this is clearly a result of this storyline attracting a lot of new readers.

And volume one of the collections is still moving bucket loads, as another 2,155 copies were ordered this month.

42. Kirby Genesis (Dynamite)
05/2011: Kirby Genesis #0 - 36,429

This is a $1 preview issue of the series by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross based on Jack Kirby characters. There are five covers.

89. Rocketeer Adventures (IDW)
05/2011: Rocketeer Adventures #1 - 19,927

An anthology miniseries with a lot of top flight creators does well for IDW.

A five issue miniseries. This issue had a Dark Horse 25th anniversary alternative cover.

Final issue. This series has been quite stable over it’s run, but still a fair bit down from the ongoing.

102. Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Lost Command (Dark Horse)
01/2011: Darth Vader & Lost Command #1 - 18,654
02/2011: Darth Vader & Lost Command #2 - 17,115 (-8.3%)

A new storyline doesn’t help the numbers.

Running late. And that’s not the best drop. There are four covers.

114. Godzilla Kingdom of Monsters (IDW)

04/2011: Godzilla Kingdom of Monsters #2 - 14,492 (-79.2%)
05/2011: Godzilla Kingdom of Monsters #3 - 14,588 (+0.7%)

That increase is definitely a positive sign for this series. IDW’s first issue promotion seems to have paid off.

                4 year (-8.9%)
                5 year (-24.5%)

The series relaunches with sales higher than they’ve been in over a year, but the trick is whether they’ll be able to hold on to these numbers.

118. Vampirella Scarlet Legion (Dynamite)
05/2011: Scarlet Legion #1 - 13,625

Dynamite is clearly never happy with only one series about any one character.

119. True Blood (IDW)

05/2011: True Blood: Tainted Love #4 - 13,617 (-14.4%)

Huge drop this month. I’m still really surprised how poorly this second miniseries has done compared to the first one.

120. Jennifer Blood (Dynamite)

03/2011: Jennifer Blood #2 - 14,180 (-18.6%)
04/2011: -
05/2011: Jennifer Blood #3 - 13,502 (-4.8%)

Doing well enough for Dynamite to turn it into an ongoing (though Garth Ennis stops writing it after the first story line).

121. The Walking Dead Survivors Guide (Image)
04/2011: Survivors Guide #1 - 16,158
05/2011: Survivors Guide #2 - 13,419 (-17.0%)

Not a comic at all. This is an encyclopedia of all the humans that have shown up in The Walking Dead. It’s four issues long and these numbers show the importance of the Walking Dead brand.

126. Conan (Dark Horse)
05/2006: Conan #28 - 31,675

Stable, but the numbers are well below what they were for the last series.

128. Mega Man (Archie)
05/2011: Mega Man #1 - 12,586

Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic has been coming out for 18 years. Over the last few years it has seen incredibly consistant (or even increasing) sales. If Archie can capture the magic again with this series it could be around for a long time.

This is interesting. The creators of Chew jumped forward a year to present an issue from the future, and will spend the next year showing how the characters get to that point. This has happened a couple of times before, but it looks like Chew will be the first title to actually make it to the future issue.

I have no idea why this increase has happened. It is kind of hard to find info about some of these titles. Googling often just leads to sites where you can download the comic illegally.

Relauching as volume three didn’t help the numbers. I believe there are four volumes planned in total.

$4.99 anthology that in 2008 had a circulation of over 200,000 copies a month including subscriptions and newsstands, and is presumably similarly high now. Sales to the direct market are negligible and erratic.

It seems no issue shipped in June, which explains why this is a double issue. (Though the next issue is apparently called the July issue).

$7.99 quarterly anthology that mixes new content with reprints. Sales go up a lot, so it could be the first month sales were split over two months.

==========

Just a reminder, all numbers on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month. These numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK (I don’t know if they include sales to Europe/Asia/etc.). They are frequently low.

Matthew Murray (usually) reviews minicomics and zines (almost) every day at 365 Zines a Year.

  1. Excellent read as always, thanks for all three of these that are put together every month.

I know Stormwatch was able to complete the bridge from publishing an issue a year ahead and then showing how they got there. That was my fave Wildstorm/Image book back in the day long before Warren Ellis got a hold of it. I don’t think Bloodstrike or Quantum and Woody made it, but that could just be my faulty memory. Hoping Chew makes it though.

Great seeing Walking Dead’s numbers increase even more. It’s always the first thing I read and this most recent storyline has been incredible. Glad to see that others are coming on board or not being able to wait for the trade at least.

  2. “this issue doesn’t seem to have any alternative covers or gimmicks”

Being a flipbook with the #0 issue for “Witch Doctor”, a (deservedly) hyped new series, doesn’t count as a “gimmick”? Or was this fact concealed from the retailers who ordered it?

  3. Drew: I didn’t realize Stormwatch had managed the feat. What issue was it? I was thinking primarily of Quantum and Woody.

Chase: One version of the comic came with that, but I believe that was priced differently and counts as a separate item.

Micah/Jason: I don’t see any mention of an alternative cover (or the inclusion of Witch Doctor) in the solicitation for The Walking Dead #85 ( You can find it here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=31059).

Brian Hibbs, of Comix Experience in San Francisco, notes that retailers were not informed that issue #86 of TWD would include a full issue of Elephantmen as a flip book (http://www.savagecritic.com/retailing/dont-fuck-with-the-pos-and-other-thoughts-on-629-by-hibbs/#more-8909).

Charles: Garth Ennis has said (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/garth-ennis-the-boys-50-101111.html) that the Boys is set to run 72 issues, plus another six issue miniseries which I think starts this month.

  4. Solicitation info for Tarot 68 a
TAROT, Witch of the Black Rose #68:
“The Trickster God,” Part 3: “Twilight of the Heroes.”
The Skeleton Man and Tarot’s mother are transported to a frozen harbor by Loki’s magick. There they face the mighty jaws and teeth of the Midgard Serpent, Jormungand. A tragic end is foreseen! Heroes die! A dark witch stands defiant in the face of a God.
    A terrible grieving begins.

Essentially you have a story involving Norse Gods, so I imagine that had something to do with it (I know it is the reason I have been picking up this four issue arc even though I don’t normally read the series).

  5. The flip book for #85 wasn’t in the original solictations but retailers were told about it by Diamond well before FOC, and I know we bumped our orders because of it.

  6. Those are massive increases for Walking Dead #83 and #85 – Did about 7000 people decide they didn’t want to pick up #84 for some reason, but then come back again the next month? haha.. Little weird.

  7. The Stormwatch issue was #25, which I think was published after #9. It was pretty shocking as those things go–characters were dead, their space station HQ had crashed to Earth, and then it all came true.

  8. I’m a fan of G.I. Joe: Real American Hero because Larry Hama created the franchise and the Marvel #1 was my first comic that I bought when I was a kid. The art has been my only issue with it.

  9. Ddin’t know 28 Days Later was ending. I loved those 2 movies. Was it always meant to end at 24? – I was going to pick up the dollar issue – and I saw the first trade is only $10.

Anyone got an opinion. Any good?

  10. @Matthew – A trip to the ol’ back issue boxes reveals an ad from StormWatch #8 touting the “Images of Tomorrow” where they would be publishing StormWatch #25 fifteen months early. As I recall, there were a few things that had to be shoehorned in to #24 to make the pieces fit, but I really enjoyed that book back in the day.

Rob Liefeld’s “Bloodstrike” also tried this but didn’t quite make it as the book ended it’s run at #22, just a few issues short of reaching the published #25. A Google search revealed that Rob Liefeld’s “Brigade” also tried it and also fell short only reaching issue #22. Not sure if there was a fourth book involved in the initiative.

Of course, as mentioned Valiant’s “Quantum and Woody” also tried it, falling short at #21.

Let’s hope “Chew” is more “StormWatch” than the others!

  11. Ugh I wish that Tarot comic would just go off and die. Doesn’t Ballent know that comics like his are making the industry a huge joke?
