IDW has created a new application with the help of a partnership with Madefire in order to open up their catalogue of comics to a wider group of fans. The brand new app store allows access to over 3,500 comics, as well as 15 free trade paperbacks available digitally. Several motion titles (as well as the collected editions) are also free up until July 12 of this year. Separate applications are also on the market for their franchises including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, and Star Trek. The app is available on iOS, with Android and Windows 8 versions coming soon. Later in the year, the publisher plans on seizing TV screens and consoles. Those that already have the older IDW app will have be automatically updated — all the comics previously purchased remain tethered to your account.

“We’re very proud to partner with IDW,” said Ben Wolstenholme, Madefire’s CEO & Co-founder. “Their world-class content is now matched with a world-class digital experience for readers. Using our Motion Book Publisher platform, IDW has control of their apps, storefront, and digital comic formats from PDF to fully immersive Motion Books. IDW is taking digital comics to the next level, and this is just the start!”

After exploring the application for myself, I discovered the interface is much better, and after creating an account fans get access to the free comics. The free books include nearly all the G.I. Joe titles you can handle, Danger Girl, Little Nemo, and more. The entire series of Star Trek: Sitting on the Edge of Forever is available as a motion book. The storefront supports in-app purchases and also includes a lot of new product from IDW.
