Last October it was officially announced that The Harvey Awards would be leaving Baltimore Comic Con. While their future home was never confirmed, The Beat learned that ReedPOP would be hosting the Harvey’s moving forward.

However, there was never an OFFICIAL announcement of the new home until today.  New York Comic Con has been confirmed as the new Harveys host con, and, as has been the buzz for weeks now, it’s also confirmed that there will be no Harvey Awards this year. Instead, a reception will be held Saturday October 7th from 8:00-11:00 at the Hudson Annex. Saturday night plans sorted then!

A full Harvey Awards will be held at the 2018 NYCC.

“We are thrilled to host such an iconic award show during one of the biggest comic events of the year, New York Comic Con,” said Lance Fensterman, Global Head of ReedPOP. “We are even more excited to honor the life and work of the late great Harvey Kurtzman here in his hometown while celebrating the industry’s best work.”

The Harvey Awards are approaching their 30-year anniversary, which takes place next year, and awards artists, writers, letterers, editors, and designers for their achievements. Kurtzman is known for a variety of projects, including the creation of MAD.

“My mother, my family, and I are excited and very honored to have the Harvey Awardsassociated with New York Comic Con. NYCC has grown exponentially over the past decade, and ReedPOP brings with them a team that is experienced in running successful events,” said Nellie Kurtzman, daughter of Harvey Kurtzman. “With my father being a lifelong New Yorker, it is only fitting that the awards return to the city where he worked, and the comic book industry was born. In 2018, we all look forward to the reboot of the awards and having the Harveys in the setting of the largest comic book convention in North America.”

I understand that the Harveys are being overhauled in all departments, and more will be announced down the road. The constant ballot box stuffing of the HArveys was a continuing issue that will be addressed.

Meanwhile, Baltimore Comic Con has formed its own Ringo Awards, with nominees announced last week.   To to recap, we’ll have an industry awards dinner at this year’s Baltimore, (which will hopefully last less than five hours) and a reception at this year’s NYCC, and next year, hopefully the Ringo banquet AND a big glitzy Harveys as only NYCC can do them.

Time to go shopping for a new Awards dress!

  1. Looking forward to the Ringos! And the Baltimore Comic-Con is always such a well run convention – on so many levels.

  2. Sadly, I don’t know if the Harveys will survive this transition. Valiant totally poisoned any credibility they had. ( I enjoy Valiant books, and one can hardly blame them for gaming the system, but they made the whole thing feel empty and contrived) With the Ringo’s popping up this year, it seems unlikely that the Harveys will be able to crawl back to the pseudo-relevance of “the comic industries second-most-important award”.
