At D23 in the Anaheim Convention center this morning, Disney revealed a short clip and some concept art for the biggest single ‘land’ expansion of Disneyland yet: Star Wars Land. The new area based on the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens film and will be built in 2017 around the Big Thunder Ranch area and will take up 14-acres of space. The first attraction features a battle between the First Order and the Resistance, as the second will put attendees behind controls the Millenium Falcon. The land will take a place on a fictional Star Wars planet that has not yet been by the previous six films in the Star Wars canon. Food and workers will be dressed according to the Star Wars cannon. Also included is a brand new event beginning in early 2016 entitled “Season of the Force.” The event will take place at Tomorrowland which will allow guests to join X-wing fights and jump aboard a reimagined Space Mountain — a fireworks show will also be included in the event. In addition, when Disney Chairman and Chief Executive Bob Iger took the D23 Expo stage, he confirmed that the lands would be immersive and will replace “Big Thunder Ranch.” However, we still aren’t sure about the full scope of what Disney has in mind for the Marvel properties based out of the new this weekend. The company confirmed an Iron Man ride this weekend, with more content featuring the Marvel characters likely on the way.

I’ll see you at Star Wars Land when it opens sometime after construction starts in 2017.

  1. Construction might start in 2017, but Disney doesn’t put an opening date on attractions, to avoid bad publicity from delays.

Cars Land was announced in October 2007, started construction in July 2009, and opened in June 2012.

  2. Ambitious and very interesting! If it’s half as good as the Harry Potter stuff in Orlando, I’ll be there in a heartbeat!
