NEW: First photo of Henry Cavill as Superman

33 Comments POSTED ON Aug 04 2011 AT 10:00 am BY The Beat

Warner Bros. has released the first picture of Henry Cavill as Superman, and as opposed to previous reveals, they have decided against a standing poser and gone for something way more action-filled and dramatic. And it works. While the trunks are in shadow, this does seem to be the traditional, red-pantied Superman look. Gone, however is the spit curl. The look of the photo is more than a little "Jim Lee-esque" with its heavy grading and dramatic lighting. In our opinion, not a bad update -- but what do you guys think?

William Shatner and Adam West — together for one glorious moment

5 Comments POSTED ON Aug 04 2011 AT 7:30 am BY The Beat

We've suggested here several times that if someone wants to make some easy money, get Adam West and William Shatner together in a movie as retired detectives who just wander around saying things. Admit it! You would listen to West's mahogany stylings and Shatner's stentorian cadences non-stop!

Kibbles ‘n’ Bits, 8/4/11

It's the dog days of comics. Everyone is resting up except for the doughty troops who are pressing on to Toronto and Chicago. While the Big Two comics controversies are whipping up a dust storm, elsewhere, things are peaceful.

WildStorm: The last lunch

18 Comments POSTED ON Aug 03 2011 AT 6:31 pm BY The Beat

It's a week of changes for DC. The last remnants of those who are moving West have packed up shop, and the WildStorm offices in La Jolla are closing for good, ending nearly 20 years of history, innovation and comics. To mark the event, an alumni lunch was held. Apparently the turnout was insane. The final group shot awaits, but above is a sampling, with Hank Kanalz, John Nee, and Carla and Jim Lee. Jim Lee tweeted:

Truth is dumber than fiction as Glenn Beck unravels Spidey conspiracy

38 Comments POSTED ON Aug 03 2011 AT 5:48 pm BY The Beat

In one of my rebuttals to one of the idiotic racist postings on The Beat yesterday, I Almost....ALMOST made a reference to Glenn Beck along the lines of, "Glenn Beck should start a line of comics just for all the angry white men; sales would soar." And then I thought, oh that's too knee-jerk. What was I thinking?

Spurlock’s Comic-Con documentary to premiere at Toronto Film Festival

4 Comments POSTED ON Aug 03 2011 AT 11:30 am BY The Beat

Morgan Spurlock's documentary recapping the 2010 Comic-Con will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, it's being reported. The film -- backed by a nerd pantheon of people like Stan Lee, Joss Whedon and Thomas Tull -- was show at last year's con and was expected to perhaps debut at this year's, but Spurlock is going for a bigger film venue in TIFF.

Can comics that don’t star white men sell?

82 Comments POSTED ON Aug 03 2011 AT 8:00 am BY The Beat

Well, HOLY CRAP. It's all done broke loose now, hasn't it. What the hell is going on? The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together. OR should that be: men and women, blacks and whites making COMICS together. It seems like "The Diversity Issue" in comics has exploded all over the place. It can't be silenced. It can't be swept under the rug. More accurately, its ISP can't be blocked. The intersquawk just won't let these issue die. Is it just a few malcontents who won't shut up? Is it a reflection of the world we live in? Or is it just that as we enter the Digital Age of comics (and everything else) infinite accessibility means that the broadening audience for comics needs them to step up and join the real world?

Every day in July the great Gabrielle Bell a href="http://gabriellebell.com/2011/08/01/31/"> posted a comic. . Out own July was a bit too chaotic for regular reading but it's all up now -- but only until August 15th. We caught up with our own reading, and it's a fascinating trip into a world of nosy supers, computer cables, post office frustration, lost keys, self doubt and survival. Check it out while you can ...and congrats Gabrielle.

Comic-Con 2011: Perception vs. Reality, Part Two

13 Comments POSTED ON Aug 02 2011 AT 9:00 pm BY Torsten Adair

Well, after posting my initial analysis of Comic-Con programming, astute Beat readers suggested I consider the square footage and attendance of each panel. Using the color-coded programming grids found on the CCI website, and then using the occupancy data for the convention center and nearby hotels, I created a nice spreadsheet for each room or hall. Here are the totals...

Watch Harrison Ford rip the head off Papa Smurf

5 Comments POSTED ON Aug 02 2011 AT 6:36 pm BY The Beat

The feud between dueling comics movies COWBOYS & ALIENs and THE SMURFS erupted in violence last night when COWBOYS star Harrison Ford ripped the head off a stuffed Papa Smurf handed to him my late night chat host Conan O'Brien. Ford's rage may have been misplaced, as COWBOYS AND ALIENS eventually edged SMURFS at the box office by a million buckaroonies or so. If nothing else, the incident set up a dandy idea for a sequel: COWBOYS VS LITTLE BLUE PEOPLE.
