While New York City is home to a lineup of great comics shops that make it one of the biggest comics markets in the US, several small bumps have hit the store community of late. There was an ownership change at Cosmic Comics; a fire at St Marks Comics; and Forbidden Planet, long a staple of the busy Union Square retailer district, is looking for a larger space. EV Grieve was the first to spot a real estate listing for FP's 13th and Broadway location, but manager Jeff Ayers said it was in order to expand:
Continue ReadingWhat a difference two letters make; just by adding a syllable, BOOM! has made its kid's line even more kid friendly, as the graphic above suggests. Although the Pixar license has gone back to Disney/Marvel, BOOM! is still publishing classic Disney materials, including Barks and Rosa, and the successful Disney Afternoon line, which just added DuckTales, and now, according to this image, is adding Peanuts to its lineup.
Continue ReadingPresented by Diamond based on sales impact and overall quality, the 2010 Gem Awards reflect the same bestsellers we've been talking about here for a while: SCOTT PILGRIM, WALKING DEAD, BRIGHTEST DAY, SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, KICK-ASS. Complete list below:
Continue ReadingThe following is a selection of new comics titles due to be published in March 2011. This list is not comprehensive, just what I've discovered browsing the Internet. Below, you'll find selected titles which caught my interest. If you would like to browse forthcoming graphic novels and related books at your leisure, click here. These are not necessarily titles I will purchase, but which I will definitely look at once they arrive at my local comics shop or bookstore. Quite a few reprints, some interesting all ages titles, and even some adaptations and tie-ins. Marvel is pushing a lot of Thor and Captain America titles this month. Not many X-Men titles... is Marvel Comics ignoring X-Men: First Class since it's not a Marvel Studios production? No Super Bowl commercial, very little buzz compared to Thor and Cap, fewer licensees...

Continue ReadingI haven't written adequately about the "Cartoon Polymaths" show currently up at Parsons, the NYC art school that teaches design and illustration. It is a concise but museum-level show about cartooning and cartoonists that really sets a new standard for how these subjects can be covered. Aside from showing movies and puppets and small Marischal-designed houses, it also has its own NEON SIGN. Wow. Curator Bill Kartalopoulos really outdid himself and got Parsons' taleted design crew on board with a fantastic installation. Anyway, if you haven't gone yet, tonight is the night to see a talk with pioneering artist Richard McGuire, who was multi-media before it was in fashion. Deets below.

Continue ReadingAs tweeted by Dave Gibbons, Pat Curley recounts the very beginnings of comics fandom -- a historic confluence of Julius Schwartz, Jerry Bails and Roy Thomas -- and shows that even then the feedback loops of fandom and editorial were closely aligned:
Continue ReadingThis week's EW contains the first photos of Henry Cavill "as" Superman -- if you call wearing a T-shirt dressing as Superman. According to the story, the first time he wore the duds, the handsome Englishman was able to overcome the inherent silliness of the panties and cape look:
Continue ReadingHm, top creators (we're guessing) on new titles. Sounds like the way things used to be in the olden (Marvel Knights, MAX) days before events drove the horse. Will these be real re-imaginings for Daredevil, Punisher, and Moon Knight? Wait and see.
Continue ReadingNo surprise at these licenses: Telltale Games, the innovative downloadable video game company, has signed on to produce games for both THE WALKING DEAD and FABLES, joining BACK TO THE FUTURE and JURASSIC PARK on their slate.
