Two years after the first season, Marvel Animation has announced that X-Men ’97 season two will premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, July 1, and dropped the first trailer for the show’s return:

Picking up directly from its predecessor, X-Men ’97‘s second season finds the mutant team scattered across the past, present (the ’90s), and future, where they must contend with Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur at different points in his history. The ancient villain is now being played by Wolverine voice actor Cal Dodd, who takes over from the first season’s Adetokumboh M’Cormack, and the late John Colicos (who voiced him on the original ’90s series).

The second season will consist of nine episodes, one less than the first, and was overseen by showrunner Matthew Chauncey, who took over from Beau DeMayo after he was fired before the release of the first season, for allegedly “egregious” misconduct. DeMayo is still credited as a writer and executive producer on the season, which was also written by JB Ballard, Bailey Moore, Antony Sellitti, Brian Ford Sullivan, and Mariah Wilson. The season was directed by Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley, who also helmed the first.

You can check the key art (based on Frank Miller‘s cover for 1982’s Wolverine #1) and several stills below in the meantime. A prequel comic, X-Men ’97: Season Two, will also begin on June 3.
