Putting together the Top Comics to Buy for September 7, 2022 list was a little overwhelming, if I’m being honest. There were almost too many DC Comics that I liked this week (apologies here Batman #127 and Poison Ivy #4), plus plenty of great books from other publishers that didn’t quite make my list. But so it goes. You can the books I did end up picking for my top 5 below, along with the usual categories…enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for September 7, 2022

Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #4
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Daniel Sampere
Colorist:Alejandro Sánchez
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: DC Comics
Witness the birth of the new DC Multiverse!
Spinning out of the pages of The Flash, the heroes have learned the secret of Pariah’s new worlds-but at what cost does this knowledge come, and what can they even do with this information-or even worse, perhaps Pariah and the Great Darkness want them to know…? On Earth-Zero, Deathstroke continues to move forward with his plans to erase legacy heroics once and for all, while Jon Kent, Nightwing, and the ragtag group of youngsters rally to step up to the increasing number of challenges. The event of the year rages on!
Why It’s Cool: You can read my full review of Dark Crisis #4 in this week’s DC Round-Up, but to sum it up, this is a well-done and fun event, one that continues to build momentum as it cruises past its halfway point this week.

Highball #1
Writer: Stuart Moore
Artist: Fred Harper
Colorist: Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Rob Steen
Publisher: AHOY Comics
BattlestarGalactica meets The Hitchhiker’s Guide-for a game of darts, over shots! Meet space pilot Highball, the best shot in the galaxy-except for one problem: he can only hit the target when he’s dead drunk. In this outrageous first issue, he faces off against a fierce but alluring bird-warrior, a disturbingly racist A.I., a crypto-obsessed fellow pilot, the maddening bureaucracy of Space Corp-and, of course, his own shameful inadequacies. Highball: saving the galaxy, one pint at a time!
Why It’s Cool: Imagine your favorite space opera or space sci-fi pulp adventure story. Now imagine your hero in that story is a total drunk. That’s a lot of what’s for sale with the fantastic new series Highball, which takes the dark humor central to that concept and extrapolates in plenty of other fun and interesting ways.

Comics to Buy for September 7Immortal X-Men #6
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Lucas Werneck
Colorist: David Curiel
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel Comics
STAND FOR JUDGMENT – AN A.X.E. TIE-IN!
Judgment comes and the Quiet Council grows suspiciously quiet. An exception: Do you think a man so devoted to the Hellfire cares one jot? Let’s find out.
Why It’s Cool:
Not all big summer superhero event tie-in comics are created equal, but this one stood out to me, using as it does the Judgement Day concept — the characters of the Marvel Universe are getting judged…cosmically — to further character beats in this ongoing title. I’m not sure readers who aren’t reading Immortal X-Men already will get this one, not entirely anyway, but I got a kick out of someone of the judgements (and reactions to those judgements) in this one.

Comics to Buy for September 7New Champion of SHAZAM! #2
Writer: Josie Campbell
Artist: Evan “Doc” Shaner
Letterer: Becca Carey
Publisher: DC Comics
Mary is back home in the City of Brotherly Love, and she’s feeling nothing but hate! Not only did she have to leave her dream school, but now she’s the caretaker of her siblings and a city that is skeptical about the new hero in town. Everyone wants a piece of Shazam, and super-powered misfits are lining up to take her on! When her world is falling apart, can our hero keep it together?
Why It’s Cool: There’s just something so special about a teen superhero comic done right, and this is one of the best and most-polished teen superhero stories I can recall reading in a very long time. Everything in this book is done well, from the choice of the terrorizing talking rabbit to the top tier artwork. This one is a must-read.

That Texas Blood #17
Writer: Christopher Condon
Artist: Jacob Phillips
Color Assistant: Pip Martin
Publisher: Image Comics
“THE SNOW FALLS ENDLESSLY IN WONDERLAND,” Part Four
Sheriff Joe Bob recounts the 1988 murder of his predecessor as the RQK invades the home of his next victim.
Why It’s Cool: I’ve been reading this one since the start, and I think we might be in the middle of the best arc yet, or at least the one with the creepiest, most unnerving villain. Adding to that, seeing our familiar Texas county get engulfed in snow here also adds to the scary, making this one an easy choice for the Top Comics to Buy for September 7 list.
