This week’s Top Comics to Buy for November 27 is a bit of a weird one, with some of the week’s scheduled output facing a distributor delay. That said, the books that do seem to be coming out are a very strong bunch. You can find my five recommendations below, along with the usual weekly lists … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for November 27

comics to buy for november 27Babs #4
Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: Jacen Burrows
Colorist: Andy Troy
Letterer: Rob Steen
Publisher: AHOY Comics
More outrageous sword-slinging from the red-hot team of Garth Ennis & Jacen Burrows (Get Fury, Crossed)! On a mission to recover her friend Izzy, Babs takes to the sea aboard a ship of smug, precious, affected elves, whose very existence infuriates her-and whose captain has undisclosed plans for her!
Why It’s Cool: The funniest book in comics continues to be the funniest book in comics this week. This series is just such an outrageous fantasy send-up. I absolutely love it, and find myself chuckling throughout.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #1
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Ryan Sook
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
It’s Black Canary versus Lady Shiva to determine who is the single greatest hand-to-hand fighter in the universe! Who will walk away with the title? Find out as writer Tom King (Wonder Woman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) and Ryan Sook (Legion of Super-Heroes) go six rounds to see if our hero has what it takes to be…the best of the best.
Why It’s Cool: This comic is a punch to the face. And after you take it, you will ask for more. It’s so well-structured, and the artwork is exceptional. I was absolutely captivated throughout from page to page. There’s not a single superfluous moment in this one. Just a perfect first issue. I always forget how any new Ryan Sook artwork is an event…until I get new Ryan Sook artwork. Really, this is just a stunning book from start to finish.

Justice League Unlimited #1
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Dan Mora
Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain
Letterer: Ariana Maher
Publisher: DC Comics
The Justice League is back and bigger than ever! In the wake of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special, Darkseid’s death has triggered a massive power vacuum in the DCU, and Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman must unite like never before and expand the Justice League to encompass every hero championing the forces of good in the face of incredible evil! As our heroes work to uncover the mystery of the dark lord’s successor, Ray Palmer’s Atom Project triggers a race between hero and villain to control the fate of metahuman abilities on planet Earth, which threatens to destroy everything the League has built. Worlds will live, worlds will die, and a surprise is waiting in store on the last page…Do not miss the dawn of the new era of justice–it all begins here!
Why It’s Cool: This is the main book to unpack the new DC Universe status quo, which features a revived space watchtower and basically every superhero on the planet joining the Justice League. And it’s a fun new status quo at that. This first issue is also a satisfying single issue on its own, taking the perspective of a hero you don’t often see. On top of that, the Dan Mora-Tamra Bonvillain art duo remains undefeated.

The Serpent in the Garden: Ed Grey and the Last Battle for England #1
Writer: Mike Mignola
Artist: Ben Stenbeck
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Clem Robins
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Witchfinder Ed Grey is summoned by Alice, queen of the last standing realm on earth, to defend her and England against Morgan Le Fay and her champion in a final standoff. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and fan-favorite artist Ben Stenbeck team up for a final story after the end of the world.
Why It’s Cool: In the main Hellboy narrative, the world has ended, but that hasn’t stopped the comics from exploring what that means. This new Edward Grey miniseries does just that, bouncing through time to tell an encumbered and epic tale born right from one of the greatest comics universe’s mythos.

comics to buy for november 27Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Chris Burnham
Colorist: Brian Reber
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Chris Burnham returns to art duties this issue as we finally learn the fate of Donatello! Trapped in a mutant zoo and forced to fight rich men looking for a thrill, his mind is still broken since last we saw him. As mysterious forces gather against him, can Donnie gather himself to defeat these enemies and set himself free?Superstar writer Jason Aaron continues his exploration of the individual Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, setting the stage for their reunion.
Why It’s Cool: Donatello is (objectively) one of the best turtles, and Chris Burnham is one of the best artists in comics. Combine them, and you get what is my favorite single issue yet in this new era of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics.
