This is not an easy week to get to the old local comicbook shop — between holiday travel, eating eating and more eating, and a just absurd winter storm sweeping the country — yet comics are coming out nonetheless, and, as such, I’ve got a list of comics to buy for December 28. It’s actually a lowkey busy week, with the Big 2 running out a bunch of notable issues before year’s end. You can find my five favorites below, along with the usual set of other lists…enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for December 28, 2022

Action Comics #1050
Writers: Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Tom Taylor, and Joshua Williamson
Artists: Mike Perkins, Clayton Henry, and Nick Dragotta
Colorist: Frank Martin
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: DC Comics
The Dark Crisis is over, and a new dawn shines on the DCU! In the wake of cataclysmic battles with Mongul, Henry Bendix, and Pariah’s Dark Army, Kal-El is back on Earth and here to stay. And the people of our planet are ready to look up, up, and away into a brighter tomorrow. Well…most of the people. Clark Kent’s reunion with Lois and his son, Jon Kent, proves fleeting when strikes the ultimate attack from Superman’s greatest adversary: Lex Luthor. But this time something is different…Luthor has stolen something from Clark’s life, something so important that it will change the very planet itself! If you think you’ve seen the biggest battle between Superman and Lex Luthor–think again! This clash will rock the course of their lives forever…and it’s only the beginning. Two years’ worth of Superman stories come to a head in this oversize anniversary issue with all-star talent that launches Superman and the DCU into an exciting new era!
Why It’s Cool:
This is the first comic set after the (very good) Dark Crisis On Infinite Earths event, and it’s also the launch of a new Superman run. I would describe the tone this book sets as bonkers comic book fun, spinning new ideas for existing plot threads and speeding with glee toward what we can expect from Superman (and also maybe linewide) in 2023. This may be one of DC’s last comics of 2022, but it’s a must-buy for those excited about the publisher’s plans for 2023. Read our full review in the DC Round-Up!

The Nice House on the Lake #12
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist:Álvaro Martínez Bueno
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: AndWorld Design
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
The cataclysmic conclusion of the Eisner Award-winning horror hit is here at last…and to say anything more would ruin the only finale more shocking than the end of the world itself! No one is safe and everything can change in an instant!
Why It’s Cool:
This twelth issue wraps up book one of one of the best original series to come out of DC Comics in years, dark and timely and just exceedingly well-done. If you’ve been reading this one, you won’t be disappointed about the many revelations (along with new questions) doled out within these pages.

Comics to Buy for December 28Sacrament #5
Writer: Peter Milligan
Artist: Marcelo Frusin
Letterer: Sal Cipriano
Publisher: AWA Studios – Upshot
The Exorcist meets Alien in this sci-fi/horror story. In the year 3000, Mankind abandoned Earth and fled into outer space. Now, a disgraced priest, called into action to perform an exorcism on a remote space colony, is about to discover that no matter how far you run, you can’t escape your demons, and the Devil is, in fact, real.
Why It’s Cool: This is the finale issue for a deep space exorcism story that also involves an intimate relationship between a priest and a nun. There’s a lot of ingredients in this one, and they all add up to one of the more singular comics of the year.
Price: $3.99

Timeless 2022 #1
Writer: Jed MacKay
Artists: Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Patch Zircher, and Salvador Larroca
Colorist: Frank Martin
Letterer: Ariana Maher
Publisher: Marvel Comics
A SHOCKING LOOK AT THE MARVEL UNIVERSE TO COME IN 2023! The last battle of Kang the Conqueror! Tyrant of the timeline, master of endless legions, warrior and conqueror without compare, Kang is in search of the one thing he cannot have. But he is not the only one after the Missing Moment, and Kang soon finds himself in a new position – on the run across the events of the Marvel Universe’s future!
Why It’s Cool:
For the second consecutive year, Marvel Comics wraps the calendar up by dropping a big oversized one-shot centered on Kang that aims to set the tone for 2023. Kang is certainly getting a big push (both in print and in the Marvel big screen adaptations), and so this becomes a must-read comic for Marvel fans looking to follow their many books next year.

Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #3
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: Nicola Scott
Colorist: Annette Kwok
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
The third and final chapter of the critically lauded and Eisner-nominated secret history of the Amazons crescendos with the inevitable-an all-out war against the gods. When Zeus discovers the goddesses defied him by creating the Amazons, seemingly nothing can stop his fervor to eliminate their warriors…not even Hera herself. But the Amazons’ numbers have grown, and there is a distinctly and unpredictably human element among their ranks now in Hippolyta and the tribe she leads. Their very fight for existence will alter the course of history itself and bring about one of the greatest protectors the world has ever known!
Why It’s Cool:
This stunning and ambitious series concludes with all-out war among the gods, making it an easy addition to the Top Comics to Buy for December 28. This series is truly an accomplishment, and this finale — illustrated this time around by Nicola Scott with colors by Annette Kwok — is a fitting climax for the book.

  1. Jeez – you’d think that the talk of the town this week would be that big DC Stan Lee behemoth of a book that was released (coincidentally or intentionally?) on his 100th birthday.
