This week is slightly lighter in the lead-up to Christmas, but there’s still a lot going on, including appearances by Dame Darcy and Paul Dini, a book release from Matt Leines, and the Boom! Studios Christmas party. In the long run, it may be Monday’s event that is the most important though:

Santa Barbara, CA, 7 PMLance and Carla Hoffman benefit screening of Star Trek II

A benefit screening of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN to raise money for Carla Hoffman, former Newsarama blogger and manager of Metro Entertainment, and her husband Lance Hoffman, who were badly burned in Santa Barbara’s Tea Fire last month. In a poignant illustration of just how severely they were injured, The Santa Barbara Independent reported this weekend that it was a month after the accident before they were even fit enough to see each other again. Tickets to the screening are $15, or $25 with admission to a pre-movie reception at 5:45 PM, and are available from Ticketmaster.

San Francisco, CA, 7 PMTotoro Forest Project opening reception

The Cartoon Art Museum hosts an exhibition of artwork created for The Totoro Forest Project Charity Auction, which saw nearly 200 acclaimed animators, cartoonists and fine artists create illustrations and sculptures inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s classic MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO. The project raised money to preserve the Sayama Forest, which inspired Miyazaki’s film. Special guests at the opening reception include Pixar Animation Studios artists Dice Tsutsumi, Enrico Casarosa and Ronnie Del Carmen. The show runs through February 8, although the full exhibition will only be on display through January 18.

New York, NY, 7 PMBAT-MANGA crew at Rocketship

Brooklyn retailer Rocketship hosts BAT-MANGA designer Chip Kidd, photographer Geoff Spear and translator Anne Ishi for a slideshow and Q&A about the book which examines how the Caped Crusader was depicted in 1960s Japan. Kidd has designed a special one-night-only bookplates for those who get their books signed that night.

Dearborn, MI, 4 PM – LatePaul Sizer at Green Brain Comics

Paul Sizer celebrates the release of his graphic novel B.P.M. with a signing at Green Brain Comics. After the signing wraps up at 7 PM, local turntable prodigy DJ Konspiracy will be spinning records starting at 8 PM. Green Brain’s monthly Comic Jam, a gathering of local comic creators and fans with free snacks and improv drawing sessions, will also be the same night.

Los Angeles, CA, 6 PM – LateBoom! Studios Holiday Party

Boom! Studios celebrates the holiday season with a big bash at Meltdown Comics. Editor-in-chief Mark Waid (THE FLASH, KINGDOM COME), co-founders Andy Cosby and Ross Richie, and writer/musician Michael Alan Nelson will all be in attendance. Doors open at 6 PM, and the show gets underway at 8 PM. As there will be free beer (!) this is a 21+ event.

New York, NY, 7 PMBrooklyn Independents at Brooklyn Public Library

Cartoonists Cristy Road (BAD HABITS) and Matt Madden (EXERCISES IN STYLE) and critic Douglas Wolk (READING COMICS) present a slideshow and discuss alternative comics on a panel called “Brooklyn Independents: What’s Alternative About Alternative Comics?” at the central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library.

Montreal, QC, 7 PM – Matt Leines at Drawn & Quarterly Bookstore

Artist Matt Leines releases his new hardcover book YOU ARE FORGIVEN from Free New Products at Drawn & Quarterly’s bookstore. A limited edition silkscreen print will also be released at the event, available only through D+Q.

Fan favorite writer Paul Dini (BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, JINGLE BELLE, LOST), signs at Meltdown Comics to celebrate the release of JINGLE BELLE: SANTA CLAUS VS. FRANKENSTEIN. Dini will sign items for fans who purchase the new Jingle Belle comic. There will also be eggnog and christmas cookies!


Saturday, December 20

Denver, CO, 6 PMJohn Porcellino and Noah Van Sciver at Kilgore Books

Denver indie cartoonists John Porcellino (KING-CAT COMIX) and Noah Van Sciver (BLAMMO) will make a joint appearance at Kilgore Books and Comics to celebrate the release of KING-CAT #69 and BLAMMO #3. There will be a signing and a discussion.
