Today at Rose City Comic Con, Image Comics announced Bitter Root, a new ongoing series by David Walker, Chuck Brown, and Sanford Green that will launch in 2018.

According to information provided by Image, Bitter Root combines history with fantasy. The story is set in 1920s New York at the height of the Harlem Renaissance. The Sangerye Family, according to the press release, is the world’s “only hope for salvation from supernatural forces threatening doom and destruction. Once the greatest family of monster hunters in the world, the Sangeryes must move beyond the tragedies of the past, or be forced to sit back and watch an unimaginable evil ravage the human race.”

Brown and Green recently collaborated on the LINE webtoon series 1000, which followed their previous collaboration on Dark Horse’s Rotten Apple. On his own, Green has developed quite a following thanks to his distinctive style and recent work on Power Man and Iron Fist over at Marvel.

For his part, Walker has written comics independently and for both DC and Marvel. He appears very excited to finally complete the big three trifecta, saying that Bitter Root “gives me the chance to work with Sanford again, Chuck, who is a great co-writer, and Image, which publishes some absolutely amazing comics.”

Bitter Root is going to be unlike any comic book people have seen,” said Walker. “We’re mixing action and horror, with a cast of characters unique to the medium to tell an epic tale of the Sangerye family, and the sacrifices they are willing to make for humanity.”

Bitter Root #1 will be in stores in 2018.
