It's a rite of autumn —The Walking Dead's new season debuts on AMC, and Walking Dead graphic novels start selling like crack again. Here's the feed from the Amazon graphic novels best seller's list. Note that The Oatmeal has sold a gazillion copies, and Roz Chast is back in the top ten following her National Book Award shortlisting. Per the usual pattern, Walking Dead GN sales will slow when the 8 episode season ends, and pick right back up when it returns next year. I know Robert Kirkman has made a buttload of money from the hit TV series, but he, Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore have also made a buttload from the books alone, given the Image deal. (BTW, for long term Amazon trend analysis I refer you to Beat contributor David Carter's weekly blog on the topic, which someday I will feature here every week. Lots of other interesting things on his site, as well.)

Well, $412 seems absurdly low to us, anyway. Renowned horror/fantasy artist Templesmith has been experimenting with hand-painted covers for several books, and this is an original one of a kind oil painting done on a copy of The Walking Dead Volume 1. The painting was varnished, and I don't know if you can read the book inside, but it seems to me that this is a pretty darned sweet collectible...especially for Halloween. Also...Christmas is coming. Artist's Editions are a recent addition to the comics shelf, starting with IDW's over sized Artist Edition series, and continuing on with giant tomes from Dynamite and Dark Horse. Put them all together and you can build a little house! IDW pioneered the form with books that reproduced art original size, with pencil marks and flaws intact. They're as spectacular as they are heavy.

Comics sales continued to look anemic in March, with sales down  4.40% in dollars and 9.85% in units over a year ago for year...

They say failure is an orphan and success is the mother of a million lawsuits—or something like that. AMC's The Walking Dead show is such a huge success that's it's already spawned a now-dismissed suit by original artist Tony Moore; and now original series creator Frank Darabont is suing AMC for unspecified but probably enormous damages, claiming he is being short changed via a form of "Hollywood Accounting."

It's Norman Reedus's world, we just live in it. Seriously, the guy is the biggest draw on the con circuit right now, and he's still honing his crossbow skills on The Walking Dead for the next few weeks. He's also got a somewhat surreal sense of humor, if you follow his twitter feed. And finally, he has a book of photos out.
