The Warworld Saga is set to conclude in August, and then in September it will be followed by the start of a six-issue crossover event called Kal-El Returns, taking place in the two main Superman titles, DC Comics has announced.
First, on Aug. 30 DC is planning to publish Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1, a one-shot comic from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artists Brandon Peterson and Will Conrad. That book will essentially conclude a storyline that has been going on — primarily in the pages of Action Comics — since Future State started in early 2021. The Kal-El Returns story will pickup afterward.
A six-issue crossover, Kal-El Returns is going to be split evenly between the Action Comics and Superman: Son of Kal-El titles. This story will specifically take place in Action Comics #1047-1049 and Superman: Son of Kal-El #16-18. It’s all slated to start on Sept. 27 with the release of Action Comics #1047.
One detail that stood out from the announcement is that the story will involve the return of a classic Superman villain — Metallo.
“What we did for Mongul with the Warworld Saga, we’re doing for Metallo in Kal-El Returns,” Johnson said in a statement. “Metallo might be my favorite Superman villain, and I think he’s often overlooked in lieu of the more god-like characters like Mongul or Darkseid. There’s a really scary, complex, interesting version of him I’ve been wanting to show readers for a long time. His origins, his motivations, and his power set are all overdue for a deep-dive refresh, and we’re ready to give readers a Metallo worthy of Superman. Stay tuned for the strongest and scariest Metallo you’ve ever seen.”

Thank goodness! This storyline has been as protracted and as dull as The Trial of the Flash.
Does seem odd that the storyline went on for so long. How many volumes of trade paperbacks will be required for Superman’s battle on Warworld?
