SPX has just announced its seven headline guests for their 2023 event taking place the weekend of September 9 and 10, 2023 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. The headliners include Derf Backderf, Leslie Stein, Tyrell Waiters, Natalie Norris, K. Wroten, Lawrence Lindell and Breena Nuñez.

SPX 2023 has just opened its advance ticket portal with a full weekend pass costing $30, or day tickets at $20 for Saturday, and $15 for the Sunday. Further information on programming, exhibitors and publisher attendees will be expected in August, according to their website. Also in August will be the announcement of nominees for the 2023 Ignatz Awards.

The full guest breakdown:

  • Derf Backderf will be presenting the paperback edition of his 2020 graphic novel Kent State. Immediately prior to his SPX appearance he will conduct a lecture about the book at the Library of Congress at 7pm, September 7.
  • New York cartoonist Leslie Stein will be showcasing her newest book Brooklyn’s Last Secret (Drawn & Quarterly)
  • K. Wroten is bringing newest graphic novel Eden II (Fantagraphics)
  • Debuting creators headlining this year at SPX will be Lyrell Waiters with far-out scifi romp Vern, Custodian of the Universe (NoBrow); and Natalie Norris with PTSD coming of age memoir Dear Mini: A Graphic Memoir, Book One (Fantagraphics)
  • Lawrence Lindell and Breena Nuñez are the co-founders (and partners) of family run micropublisher Laneha House and co-hosts of the Kinnard Awards to celebrate the comics community. Lawrence has a graphic novel debuting in September from Drawn & Quarterly, Blackward, and also has a forthcoming book from Random House Graphic in 2024. Breena will be representing their small press and presenting the newest release Laneha House, Issue 10 which will “feature a series of comic strips that chronicle Breena’s experience of what it like to navigate life during pregnancy and in postpartum as a mother/birthing parent”.
