The time has arrived: it’s the weekend once again! That means it’s time for the Beat staff to share our plans for Weekend Reading 9.
It has been great to hear from Beat readers about their reading plans in the comment section, and we hope to hear from everyone again this week. Please let us know what you’re reading in the comments!
NANCY POWELL: A long weekend usually means I can catch up on long ignored projects, and Kim Hyun Sook’s Banned Book Club and Jerry Craft’s New Kid are at the top of my catch-up reading list. I was also inspired by Avery to give Kindred (by Octavia Butler) a try.
TAIMUR DAR: A few years ago my friend loaned me the first couple of volumes of James Robinson’s acclaimed Starman series. Had to stop around the Sandman/Wesley Dodds team-up storyline when I got busy with other distractions. Always mean to pick it back up and thanks to the Stargirl TV show, I’m on a JSA kick with the entire run available on the DC Universe platform. And of course, couldn’t help doing another reread of Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. from Geoff Johns and Lee Moder.
JOSH HILGENBERG: I’m thinking the time has finally come for me to check out DC’s Batman: The Adventures Continue series from writers Alan Burnett and Paul Dini, artist Ty Templeton, colorist Monica Kubina and letterer Joshua Reed. The itch for more Batman: The Animated Series is one that must be eternally scratched, after all – and I’m a sucker for a good Deathstroke story.
AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’ll be checking out volume one of Goddess Mode by Zoë Quinn and Robbi Rodriguez. Then, as far as prose goes, I’m looking forward to beginning Gideon the Ninth by Tamysn Muir.
JOE GRUNENWALD: It’s a long weekend, so I’m going to attempt to dive into a longer read. I’ve had Alan Moore & Eddie Campbell’s From Hell on my tablet for literally years, taunting me to read it. I’m going to attempt to give that a go this weekend.
RICARDO SERRANO: I just got a pretty twisted horror book in the mail called Will Haunt You, by Brian Kirk, that I’m dying to get into. It’s about a book that violently haunts those who read it while also haunting you (yes you, the reader!) as YOU read it. I’ve already sneaked in a few pages and can confirm…this book is coming after me bad. Also got some more George Pérez Wonder Woman to keep me busy over the long weekend. If the horror book starts dialing the evil up to 11, I’m hoping Wonder Woman’ll come to my rescue.
BILLY HENEHAN: Earlier this week, I took a dive in Marvel Unlimited back to one of the key issues of my childhood, Uncanny X-Men #248, Jim Lee’s first issue on the title. Something about the uncertainty of what we’re living through right now had me longing for something familiar. I forgot how truly trippy this issue is, from Longshot’s fading into nothingness to Storm being way too calm about it, chitchatting with Gateway as Longshot literally falls apart. It was also jarring to look at Jim Lee X-Men art not inked by Scott Williams. If anyone needs me, I will be deep diving through the rest of Jim Lee’s Uncanny X-Men run this long holiday weekend, with a big smile on my face.
KYLE PINION: Having finally finished Hyperion (and wow! What a novel! Can’t recommended it enough), I’m now moving into my first experience with Samuel R. Delany, with his novel Nova, which is described as “Moby Dick with strobe lights”. I’m 35 pages in and there’s already been a detailed discussion of hypothetical Period Table elements. This is gonna be a ride! I’ve already ordered two more of his books.
Hyperion is a great read, indeed.
As for what I’m reading, it is the first “Umbrella Academy” trade.
