Saturday is here, and it brought Weekend Reading 195! As usual, we’ll be holing up in Stately Beat Manor and getting lost in a pile of good books. What are you paging through this weekend? Be sure and let The Beat know in the comment section.

Weekend Reading 195
Weekend Reading 195: Top 10 & The Priory of the Orange Tree.

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’m starting The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. I picked this prose book up based on a recommendation from G.O.A.T. Comics Beat Editor Samantha Puc and I do not expect to be disappointed. Then as far as comics go, I’ll be checking out a copy of the Top 10 Compendium by Alan Moore, Gene Ha, Zander Cannon, et al. I haven’t previously read any Top 10 but considering the pedigree of the creative team, I’m certainly looking forward to it.

Weekend Reading 195: Furries Among Us and What’s Wrong?

REBECCA OLIVER KAPLAN: Well, it appears that this weekend the Kaplans are checking out Sam’s reading recommendations. After reading Sam’s review of What’s Wrong? Personal Histories of Chronic Pain and Bad Medicine by Erin Williams on The Beat, I promptly ordered a copy of the graphic novel to read for myself. In addition, I’m learning more about the furry community by checking out Furries Among Us and Furries Among Us 2, both edited by Thurston Howl.

Weekend Reading 195: Shuna’s Journey.

TAIMUR DAR: I received a few fun gifts from my family for my birthday earlier this week that will keep me busy in the entertainment department for awhile. Among my gifts was the English-language edition Shuna’s Journey, the one-volume watercolor-illustrated graphic novel by Hayao Miyazaki that came out from First Second back in 2022. It goes without saying that I adore Miyazaki films, so I have no doubt it will be the same for this graphic novel.

Weekend Reading 195: Wild’s End.

D. MORRIS: I can’t begin to express how excited I am that my copy of the Wild’s End Compendium came out this week. Dan Abnett and I.N.J. Culbard’s anthropomorphic take on War of the Worlds was a favorite comic of mine from last decade. I think I missed the final series in that first run so I’m excited to see how it all ends. Now I just need to read the most recent series from last year.

Weekend Reading 195: MADK.

KRISTINA ELYSE BUTKE: I’m getting into some darker, weirder BL this weekend, reading MADK Volumes 1-3 by Ryo Suzuri. It’s about a boy with strange desires who summons a demon to fulfill one of them–eating the demon’s guts in exchange for his life. But little does he know, he’s about to be reborn as a demon in hell! This is a highly rated series so I thought I’d give it a try, but it’s outside my normal fare, so who knows how it’ll go?
