Shut-In Theater: Weekend Reading 189

It’s Saturday once again, and that means Weekend Reading 189 has arrived. As the winter solstice approaches,  we’ll be holing up in Stately Beat Manor and getting lost in a good book.

What will you be reading? Be sure and let The Beat know in the comment section.

Weekend Reading 189: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: The Making of the Classic Film

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’m digging into Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: The Making of the Classic Film by John Tenuto & Maria Jose Tenuto. This oversized, gorgeously designed book features tons of photos and bits of information I’ve never seen before. Did you know the Log Lady (Catherine E. Coulson) was the first camera assistant on Wrath of Khan? And that probably means she was the first woman to ever hold that position on a major Hollywood production? I thought I knew everything about Wrath of Khan after a half-dozen commentary tracks, so I’m eager to find out what else I’ll learn from this book.

Weekend Reading 189: Green Lanterns Vol. 1: Rage Planet.

TAIMUR DAR: As revealed in the DC March solicitations, it looks like writer Sam Humphries is returning to the world of GL doing some backup stories in the main Green Lantern book, presumably focused on Jessica Cruz. I have a huge admiration for his work with the character on the Green Lanterns series that came out of DC Rebirth. I’ve read sporadic issues but I think it’s time to read the full run. So I’m going to start with Green Lanterns Vol. 1 Rage Planet.

D. MORRIS: After reading Christina Wong’s review this week, I’m checking out Minami’s Lover by Shungiku Uchida. It’s the usual story of a teenage boy and his six inch tall girlfriend, normal teenage. Originally published in venerated alternative manga magazine Garo, I’m sold on the art and premise. Viva alternative manga!
