AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend I’m going to be reading Invader Zim: Volume Five, Deluxe Edition. I haven’t read every issue in this collection of the Oni Press Invader Zim run, so I’m looking forward to catching up. Then for prose, I’m going to check out Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events by Brent Spiner.
CY BELTRAN: Well I’ve missed the last few weekends of reading for one reason or another, but I’m back to share that I’ll be checking out The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. I’m about 150 pages in so far and while fantasy is definitely not my favorite, it’s still been an interesting read. I also plan to read the first four issues of Generation X from Scott Lobdell and Chris Bachelo. I’ve read these a number of times and enjoy them a ton, but I’m diving back in for my on-again, off-again New Mutants/X-Force/Gen X megaread.
CHRISTIAN ANGELES: New to this! I’m reading Loeb’s The Long Halloween over from the beginning as I’ve been doing a best of Batman read since October, having already finished Frank Miller’s Year One. I’m also catching up on Hack/Slash as I just finished read Zoe Thorogood’s first issue and loved it. Next one arrives next week.
TAIMUR DAR: I’ve been eager to read MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards for some time. Given the less than stellar box office results of the most recent MCU film, I can’t think of a more appropriate time to take a look at how far Marvel Studios has come from its heyday. Likewise, I’m continuing my read of the original Invincible comics. Right now I’m on Vol. 2 Reboot?, the storyline I’ve been looking forward to reading for some time. I was hoping I’d be able to finish it before the end of the year and looks like that indeed will be the case.
KRISTINA ELYSE BUTKE: I’m continuing my steady reading of BL by checking out Tokyo Pop’s new release A Kiss That Stains the Innocence by Emu Soutome, about a man who lives alone in the mountains a decade after his village was razed by the king, and his conflicted relationship with the prince who seeks out his help. Next up is volume one of Love Nest 2nd by Yuu Minaduki, from Viz Media’s SuBLime imprint. It’s a sequel to the original series Love Nest, about oddly matched roommates whose relationship becomes something more. I’m looking forward to the continuation of the series, but it’s been a while, so I’ll probably read Love Nest over again to refresh my memory before diving into Love Nest 2nd. Anyway, I expect these two to be fun additions to my vast BL library and I look forward to enjoying them.
MERVE GİRAY: This weekend, I’ll be reading The Bow, a Boys Love manga by Kuroda Sakaki, available on Manga Planet. Age gap is one of my go-to tropes, I adored the artist’s I Want You Back, and I’ve requested this title long time ago. Can’t wait to finally read it in English! I’ve also been curious about George Saunders’ works, and will give his short story collection Pastoralia a chance.
BEAU Q.: This is the weekend to get high. I mean it. I’ve been sitting on a book for years waiting for the perfect weather, perfect mood, perfect lighting to chill with. Sure, I’ve had opportunities time and again, but with a cuppa tea in my hand, one book jumped off one of my shelves this week. So I’m getting high as hell with Christopher Sebela and Ibrahim Moustafa’s High Crimes [the Dark Horse HC, not the Image tpb]. Time to chill!
REBECCA OLIVER KAPLAN: I live in a California mountain town, so every weekend is the weekend to get high (although it has nothing to do with what I’m reading this weekend, like Beau Q.). This weekend, I’m checking out The Chromatic Fantasy by H.A. on Avery Kaplan‘s recommendation and Doctor Who Psychology, edited by Travis Langley. If I have extra time this weekend, I also want to read Wordslut by Amanda Montell, again, on recommendation from my lovely wife (but first, I’m finishing the Britney Spears autobio audiobook, The Woman in Me). Finally, because I’m sick of the revolving door of sexism that has to do with Marvel, I’m reading Ms. Marvel Stretched Thin, written by Nadia Shammas, with illustrations by Nabi H. Ali.
