DC announced a major new series at its “What’s Happening in the DC Multiverse” panel on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. For the first time since 1997, Jack Kirby’s Fourth World characters the New Gods will star in an ongoing series..

Launching in December, New Gods is written by Ram V (who recently signed an exclusive deal with DC) and drawn by Evan Cagle. Aside from this basic information, however, the panel didn’t reveal much. DC editor-in-chief Marie Javins said she “can’t talk about New Gods because it will spoil a lot from Absolute Power,” which sees the return of the Justice League as a super-team following the events of Dark Crisis.

In the announcement art by Pete Woods (below), you can see Highfather, Orion, Big Barda, Mister Miracle, Lightray, and Metron. It’s one helluva team, and it sounds like the future of the DCU will need every one of them.

Fourth World villain Darkseid is the major antagonist of DC All In, so it makes sense that the New Gods will have an ongoing series as part of the publishing initiative. Ostensibly, the team will play a major role in the fight against the villain, who DC All In one-shot co-writer Scott Snyder previously said has discovered something is missing in the DCU. He’s on a quest to find that thing, which results in the creation of the Absolute Universe—”a dangerous new planet” populated by new versions of beloved DC characters.

“Without giving too much away,” Snyder said, “if the main universe is predicated on Superman energy, in this universe, it’s kind of founded on Darkseid energy.”

It might be a while before we get more details on the New Gods ongoing series, since December solicits won’t be released until September, but DC may give us hints in the meantime. It’s just good to see this team back together.

  1. “… and it sounds like the future of the DCU will need every one of them.”
One would think that the Future of the DCU would be protected in the Legion of Super Heroes title.

    Oh, wait…

  2. Hasn’t V. proven himself to be incoherent enough on Batman? I can only imagine the levels of opaque obtuseness this series will consist of. Eight issues and out will be my guess.

  3. Totally agree re: Ram V. Couldn’t be more wrong for a Kirby book. And the New Gods aren’t a “team.” Dig Pete Woods but another DC still birth
